Principal's Letter
Dear Lake Windward Families,
Well, just like that we are approaching the end of another fantastic school year! I am so proud of our LWE Gators! I've been in "end of school year" meetings with teachers over the past two weeks discussing student celebrations and growth, and the results are amazing! Our students have grown so much academically!! We have been navigating a pandemic over the past two years, but our students and staff have persevered and come out strong!
One area of growth that I have heard over and over this year from teachers is that, in general, students are not where they typically would be socially and emotionally due to the disruptions of the pandemic. I would like to encourage LWE families to be intentional about social and emotional health and growth over the summer. Challenge your child to solve problems independently (as appropriate, of course). For example, if they spill a drink, let them think through how to solve the problem. Encourage your child to play outdoors with other children to sharpen developmental skills such as sharing and taking turns. Allow your child to be responsible for some age appropriate chores around the house (i.e. feed pets, vacuum, sweep, fold and put away laundry). This builds confidence and independence in children. Believe it or not, all of these skills are super important for children to have in the classroom and beyond! We can make even more progress with our students if they have opportunities to practice these things outside of the classroom.
Last but not least, don't forget to do some reading and writing! Encourage your child to read for pleasure over the summer. Visit a local library if you need books or take advantage of some free books online. If your child would like to write to me over the summer, have them mail me a letter to the school! I promise to write them back! :)
Enjoy this last week of school! Especially, our 5th graders!! You are a fantastic group of students! We will miss you!!
Kind regards,
Julie Morris
