English Language Arts
In third grade, students will continue learning about determining the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area. Utilizing informational text such as Hottest, Coldest, Highest, Deepest will facilitate on-going vocabulary instruction. Students will be explaining how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story using literary texts, including Rocks in his Head. Texts such as Fly, Eagle, Fly! will be used to support students in asking and answering questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. Additionally this month, students will be comparing and contrasting the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic. An excellent text to accompany this standard is America’s Champion Swimmer: Gertrude Ederle. Incorporating student talk structures such as “Hand Up, Pair Up” allows students to think and speak about grade level text and listen to the perspectives of others.
In fourth grade, students will continue learning how to determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text and how to summarize the text. An excellent text to accompany this standard is The Case of the Gasping Garbage. Texts such as Seeker of Knowledge will be used to support students in referring to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Students will also be learning how to explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text. Reading Navajo Code Talkers will provide opportunities for students to keep developing their understanding of this standard. Additionally, students will determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area by using informational texts, including Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon. Incorporating student talk structures such as “Socratic Seminar” allows students to think and speak about grade level text and listen to the perspectives of others.
In fifth grade, students will continue learning how to compare and contrast stories in the same genre on their approaches to similar themes and topics using literary text such as Weslandia. Texts such as Tripping Over the Lunch Lady will be used to support students in determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Students will learn to explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem. Additionally, students will be learning how to explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text. Reading Exploding Ants will provide opportunities for students to continue to develop their understanding of this standard. Incorporating student talk structures such as Text Talk allows students to think and speak about grade level text and listen to the perspectives of others.
ELL Connections:
In order to promote comprehension for EL (ALL!) students, teachers need to give students opportunities to speak using academic language. Below are the “The GO TO Strategies: Scaffolding Options for Teachers of English Language Learners, K-12” for speaking. These strategies were chosen because of their usefulness in helping teachers scaffold content for language input.
For Entering EL students, Choral Reading includes learners in the classroom conversation.
For Emerging EL students, Think-Pair-Share-Squared encourages students to speak with other students.
For Developing EL students, Collaborative Dialogues between the teacher and student promote academic language through strategies such as repeat, recast, reformulate, and prompt.
ALL Students can begin to give oral reports at this level if scaffolding is provided. Allow use of note cards and opportunities to practice the presentation beforehand.
ALL Students can participate in academic debates on various viewpoints. Scaffold by providing Graphic Organizers or Outlines.
Writing Grades 3-5:
This month, we want to narrow the focus in informative writing. Seize the opportunity by utilizing the writing mini lessons in the curriculum resource folder to place increased focus on our writers' needs. Remind students that the primary purpose of this style of writing is to increase the understanding of the reader. Even when synthesizing information from multiple sources it is vital that students find commonalities and differences to speak about and write about. The use of a graphic organizer can help students stay focused and sort their key information.
Open Office Hours for teachers grades K – 5 Monday, February 1, 2021, 8:30-11:30 and 12:30-3:30. https://colliercountyschools.webex.com/meet/pikeam
Math
In third grade, students will solve problems involving addition and subtraction time intervals. They will tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest minute, measure time intervals in minutes, and solve word problems involving elapsed time. Students will build an understanding of fraction concepts including: partitioning shapes into equal areas, representing fractions using models, expressing whole numbers as fractions, representing and naming fractions greater than one, and measuring lengths in halves and fourths of an inch.
In fourth grade, students will operate with fractions with like denominators. They will decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions, use models and equations to represent and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, add fractions with denominators of 10 and 100, and rename mixed numbers as equivalent fractions to add and subtract.
In fifth grade, students will add, subtract, and multiply with decimals. They will use concrete and visual models, use the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract decimals, and use place-value strategies and properties of operations to add and subtract or multiply decimals.
Khan Academy MAFS Practice
Content from Khan Academy aligned to MAFS has been identified in the Khan Academy MAFS practice document for grades 3-5. Content may be used as a supplement or review of previously taught concepts.
Grade 3 Khan Academy MAFS Practice
Science
In third grade, students will be able to demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes another object, travels from one medium to another and can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed. During this light unit, students will participate in the Laser Light Challenge. Students will also be able to investigate how heat is produced when one object rubs up against another and that objects that give off light often give off heat. Check out the Grade 3 Benchmark Clarifications for details.
In fourth grade, students will investigate the speed of an object as determined by the distance it travels and recognize that an object in motion always changes its position and may change its direction. They will be able to understand and describe that magnets attract magnetic materials and attract or repel other magnets. Finally, students will be able to measure and compare objects and materials based on their physical properties, including water and common uses in each of its states. Visit the Grade 4 Benchmark Clarifications for more details.
In fifth grade, students will be able to understand and identify materials that dissolve in water and those that do not, as well as the conditions that speed up or slow down the process. They will be able to understand and describe that temperature affects many physical and chemical changes. They will be able to understand and describe basic forms of energy and explain that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change. Additional information can be found in the Grade 5 Benchmark Clarifications and the Grade 5 Test Item Specifications.

February Curriculum Highlights
Just a reminder to please schedule the first 10 minutes of each class period for keyboarding practice for students in grades 2-5.
Monthly Digital Citizenship focus (incorporate into daily instruction) – Media Literacy - review the importance of understanding the different types and sources of information and how to use critical thinking skills to evaluate which sources are valid and reliable. We should teach students to answer the following questions when looking at a resource: Can you read all the words on the site? Does what you’re reading make sense? Who created this site? When was this site created? Can you find this information on other sites?
Common Sense Media Family Tips - Link
Excel – Modules for grades 3-5 are located in Commons. Skills are focused on basic tools and formatting as well inputting data, applying formulas, creating charts that represent the data and interpreting the data. Remember that there is time in Q3 if an additional week is needed.

School Counseling/Social Emotional Learning
District SEL Theme for February: Social Awareness
Social Awareness is the ability to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts. This includes the capacity to feel compassion for others, understand social norms for behavior in different settings, recognize strengths in others, show concern for the feelings of others, and understand and express gratitude.
A key component of social awareness is the ability to show kindness. During Random Acts of Kindness Week (and throughout the month and year), encourage your on-campus and virtual students to make the world a better place by performing kindness acts such as:
- Waving or smiling at others
- Saying, “Good morning” to 10 people
- Holding the door open for someone
- Socializing with someone new
- Sincerely complimenting 5 people
- Saying, “Thank you” to a bus driver/crossing guard/cafeteria worker/plant operator/parent
- Helping a younger student/sibling/neighbor
- Picking up trash outside their school or neighborhood
“Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.”
