It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Chirstmas

Christmas has arrived! We are fully engaged in the experience as we learn about decorations, the history of all things Christmas and songs for the season. We put our classroom tree up and have been decorating it every day. The first song we learned was O Tannenbaum, a carol from Germany describing the Christmas tree. We read a book by Tomie DePaola titled A Family Christmas Tree Book that described the origin of Christmas trees, lights and ornaments. We’ve learned the significance of and added an ornament every day (candle, candy cane, bell, Santa, angel) and read some wonderful stories to go with each ornament. Along the way we’ve learned some Christmas carols that we will be singing throughout our building before Christmas break. We are doing an in-depth investigation of evergreen trees that will continue into next week. We’ll be spending quite a bit of time on the stories of the gingerbread man and will use that story as a springboard for an engineering project.

What's Happening Next Week?

We'll continue our study of Christmas traditions and other winter holidays. The Gingerbread Man will be the book that leads us into a new science and engineering focus. We'll read several versions of the story and then decide to build either a bridge or a flotation device for the gingerbread man to use in his quest to cross the water.
