Keeping Elliott teachers in the KNOW!
Math
Thank you so much for your time, patience, and collaboration as we work through the process of implementing Exemplars. I appreciate your openness and rich dialogue!
F.A.Q.
1. Can we do the parts of the rubric in a different order? Yes, if you’d like to start with Connections first (the one in the video), you can do that. It is up to you which order you teach the processes.
2. What do we do about the daily problem solving problems that may not work well with the rubric but cover the content that we are teaching right now? Use those problems to launch your mini lesson or teacher table
3. Are we solving the entire problem when we start? No, you are only modeling (think-aloud) the section of the rubric that you are focusing on for the week
4. On Days 2-4, do we need to worry about students getting the correct answers? No, you are not worried about the correct answers, you are only focusing on whether or not they are successful with the process you are focusing on for that week (ex. If they are able to make a connection). They can work on using the language of the rubric and self-assessing. There are some great resources for this on Eduphoria
5. Just a helpful hint: You CAN repeat the problems that you are using for Days 2-4 each week and just have students focus on the different sections of the rubric. This could save some time for you! Just be sure to pick some great problems that would lend themselves nicely to the rubric.
6. For KINDER ONLY: You do NOT need to introduce the rubric quite yet. For now, you are focusing more on the thinking. You will NOT solve the entire problem on the first day, just do your focused process for the week.
I know this is a lot, but I know that we are going to be so successful with this implementation because of your hard work! Please let me know how I can support you with this process. Email me if you have any questions. It is imperative that you watch the videos, because they are a great model of how this can look in the classroom.

Collaborative Learning
This additional 45 minute time is provided to give extra time to collaborate together as a team to boost student achievement. Since some teams were wanting ideas on what to do during this time here are just a few ideas. Teams create their own agendas since you know your needs best.
Possible Agenda Items:
- establish norms
- establish collective commitments
- create goals
- review student data
- backwards plan
- create common formative assessments (CFA's)
- analyze common formative assessments
- plan for ways to integrate subjects
Norms VS. Collective Committments
At first, I thought Collective Commitments was the new name for Norms, but I realize now how they differ and support each other. Since sometimes these are confused with each other, here is some clarification on how they are different.
Norms are like rules. They tell what team members should do to be prepared and focused to spend time collaboratively learning. What do you need from your teammates to feel your time together was beneficial?
Collective Commitments are what we are going to do to ensure student achievement and explain our beliefs about celebrating and empowering all children. How must we behave to create the school that will achieve our purpose?
Basically, we use Norms to stay true to our Collective Commitments.
What is a PLC?
If you are new to FISD, you may be wondering what everyone is talking about when they mention PLC. A great website to check out is allthingsplc.info if you want more information.
Professional learning community (PLC)
An ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. Professional learning communities operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous job-embedded learning for educators.
