Welcome Back Assembly
Students were welcomed back to school with a SOAR Assembly on January 4th.
The student council leaders gave their top 5 tips for being kind and introduced Gratitude Station 2.0. Gratitude Station 2.0 has launched on Schoology and encourages students and staff to share acts of kindness they see in the building. After the assembly, there were a lot of great acts of kindness being shared.
The annual Winter Wear Relay also took place. Two students who demonstrate kindness daily from each homeroom were selected to run the relay. They had to run to select articles of winter wear to dress teachers. The winter wear included: snowpants, hat, gloves, boots, coat, and scarf. The teachers were: Mrs. Schumacher, Mr. Berndt, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Hernais, Miss Husted, and Mrs. Musgrove. Miss Husted's team won the relay! Mr. Lyon reminded students to wear all the appropriate clothing outside!

EL Holiday Luncheon
Photos by: Madison
If you didn’t know, there was a holiday lunch that took place in the LGA. This event celebrated a holiday that many people don’t know about. It’s a celebration that’s like New Years and it celebrates differences. There were many speakers there that explained their culture and how they got here. The first speaker goes to the high school and she made many friends there. She likes art and she is from Thailand. In Thailand, you can not choose what classes you take so she is happy that she can now have a choice. Is is also very hot in Thailand, and there is no snow there. The school hours in Thailand are from 7:00am to 4:00pm without study hours. Every day there were two more hours of studying after school in Thailand. She was a sophomore in Thailand, but now is a junior at the high school. The second speaker was somebody from our own school. He did a presentation on the beast that they believed in in Thailand. It was a very interesting presentation that had a lot of information. One of my favorite beasts was Kon Koi. One of the greetings was putting your hands together and bowing your head then saying hello in Thai. We got to see some of the food that they eat in Thailand. And we read about their culture. We had a great time there and learned a lot.

5th Grade Sing Carols
On December 21st, the 5th graders sang a few carols before going on break. They sang carols in the Large Group Area. The 5th graders did this because it was something fun to do before going on break. Instead of doing work, they did something fun. Some of the carols the 5th graders sang was Silver Bells, Angels We Have Heard on High, and Nuttin’ for Christmas. There was one song that was very special to Mr. Whipple, one of the 5th grade teachers, and the song was Silver Bells. It was very special to him because he grew up singing this carol, and it was fun for him to hear the 5th graders sing it for him. These 5th graders had a very fun time singing carols.

Mrs. Matteson's Class Grew Algae!
By: Brooklyn and Brody
In the months of November and December, the whole fourth grade was learning about the amazing life of Algae. They learned about what Algae is in. For example yogurt, milk, even toothpaste, and so much more! What are the three names of Algae? Carrageenan, Agar, and Alginate. How to grow Algae? Fourth grade grew Algae in three plastic containers, each with different amounts of Algae, and the Algae grew and grew. The conditions the Algae grew in was in water and lots of light.
Brooklyn says, “That this was a great activity for the fourth grade, we learned a lot and wished we had such a fun month of science at our elementary schools. Algae is an important thing to learn about and is so much! Thank you Algae Academy and the Milton High School to provide all are supplies and for the whole month of fun! And I thought algae was bad for you!”
Brody says, ”That this was a fun activity and I think that the fourth grade classes had a lot of fun doing this activity. It was so cool learning what Algae was in and how it grows I never knew that Algae was so important. I thought Algae was gross, but it’s really important!”
Mrs. LaBansky's Class Enjoy Coding and Kidblog
By: Macy and Arantza
In early December, Mrs. La Bansky’s and nearly 220,000 other classes participated in the Hour of Code. When we did Hour of Code there were different themes you can do. In the dance party, you can choose the music and you make a character dance. There is also an art one, where you try code to trace a shape. Additionally, there is even a Minecraft game where you can get supplies by coding and you can also build a house by coding.
We also like to do just regular block coding on Code.org. We get to watch coding videos and participate in team building activities. Code.org is fun to because there are different levels with different themes. If you pass a certain level (like there was one where you had to code out a picture), it was awesome and there were more pictures a lot more! When you pass a certain level it gets harder and it’s more challenging! But a challenge is always fun because if you get something wrong you can learn from it.
Kidblog
By: AJ and Jake
Recently our teacher introduced Kidblog. Kidblog is a website that lets you post writing/blogs on it for others to read. Kidblog says that, “Kidblog provides k-12 teachers with tools to safely publish student writing. Teachers can monitor all activity within a community of authors. Posts can even be public, but nothing goes live until a teacher approves it.” We are given questions and we comment on other people’s stuff, but the teacher gets to check it to make sure it’s appropriate and on topic or related to the topic. Kidblog says that, “Students voices matter. Teachers in over 70 countries trust Kidblog to share student writing with a real audience.” It’s a great way to share your thinking with others!
All About Mrs. Kingsley’s Class
Mrs.Kingsley’s language classes are working on a debate unit. What her class is doing is a debate project on a subject every student had selected. They have a partner and had to choose what side of the topic to be on. For example, the pros and cons on hunting or video games.
Some subjects are vaccines, hunting, social media and video games. A lot of research is involved in the project as well as taking notes and planning. We have had to use websites, books, and videos to find our information about our topics. We also have had to use a planner and research packet to keep our information organized. In our research packet we have 8 boxes in total and 4 for each side, against and for our topics. Our planners have 2 lists one to push our thinking and another to help us persuade our readers to come on our side of the debate. Mrs. Kingsley has helped all of us all the way through the debate and she has printed articles for us and talked us through the whole thing. The debate can be hard and frustrating but it will be fun in the end.
In Mrs. Kingsley’s class she has a wonderland of tools to help us learn. She has a great personality and makes class fun for kids. I know this because she always has a smile on her face and our classmates have big personalities too.
January News from Mrs. Gille's Room
Boston Massacre Escape Room
We have been studying the causes of the American Revolution in Social Studies. One event that lead up to the Revolution was the Boston Massacre. Mrs. Gille sent us on a secret mission to decode interesting facts about the Boston Massacre in an “Escape Room” activity.
We were given a secret code name and had to walk around the room and decipher codes that taught us about the Causes of the Revolution. The goal was to solve the case by turning the clues into a 4 digit code to open the final lock.
This was a really fun activity to learn more about the causes of the American Revolution. It also taught us how problem solve, solve codes using ciphers, Morse Code, and cryptograms, and a little math too!
English Pen Pals
In our class we have been assigned a pen pal from Great Harwood, England. We are learning about life in England and how to improve our writing skills. It is so much fun learning about life in a different country, about the food they eat, and how our education and school life is similar and how it is different. What is most interesting is how much alike we are even though we live an ocean away!

Mrs. Laskowski's Class Has a Visit From Cricket
By: Mrs. Laskowski's Class
In the month of December of 2018, our homeroom raised $152 for the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin! We did this instead of doing Secret Santa because we wanted to help the community. As a reward, DeShawn and Jim from the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin visited our homeroom and brought Cricket, one of the stray dogs they are helping. Cricket is around 5-6 years old. He is currently in the stage of adoption. Some of the other adoptable cats and dogs are named: Allie, Envy, Wilbur, Sabrina, Peace, and Gloria.
When the Humane Society came to our class, they explained several ways people can give better care to their pets. A few of the things DeShawn and Jim discussed were: keeping your dog on a leash outside, keeping cats inside, having your pet microchipped in case they get lost, and spay or neuter your pet to keep the population down.
Interested in helping these animals? Here are some ways you can help the Humane Society: donate food and/or supplies, raise money to donate, volunteer (with an adult!), or talk to your family about fostering or adopting an animal! A great idea that our class discussed was instead of asking for presents for your birthday, have your guests bring something for the Humane Society-or even a different charity of your choice! Together, we can all help to make the world a better place.
Mrs. Deininger's Class Enjoys Escape Room
By: Erin
Have you ever heard of an escape room before? My class does them in our math class. It is a team activity, where we are working together to solve the math problems. It is a cool way to learn about the unit we’re doing. So far we have done one on simplifying expressions and an area of pizza one.
In the escape rooms we have to solve a couple problems to get to the next level. Answers may be a certain word, a number, or number code. Escape rooms are a fun way to do our math and is fun to do in a group. Escape room have some trial and error, but are awesome to finish in the end.
“It is very knowledgeable and a is very enjoyable,” says Elizabeth.
Mrs. Deininger thinks, “They are a fun way to keep students engaged while working on the skills we are learning in the classroom.” Our class is looking forward to escape room, that is winter themed.
