Water Safety
California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW), the Department of Water Resources (DWR), and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) are urging the public to take extra precautions and to be aware of cold-water dangers this spring to avoid a tragedy. The series of winter storms is causing rising river and stream flow levels not seen in years. The eventual spring warm-up will bring fast flows and cold temperatures when all that snow starts to melt. All Californians are being encouraged to wait until summer to recreate in the water when conditions are safer.

ALL MEDICATIONS NOT PICKED UP BY THE LAST DAY OF THE SCHOOL WILL BE DISCARDED AT THE END OF THE DAY.
As it nears the end of the school year, this is a reminder that we have medications at the nurse's office that belong to your child. As there is no appropriate storage or monitoring for these medications through the summer break-
ALL MEDICATIONS NOT PICKED UP BY THE LAST DAY OF THE SCHOOL WILL BE DISCARDED AT THE END OF THE DAY.
Please note: a new permission form for all medication is required at the beginning of each school year (the form is included). It is recommended that you take the enclosed permission form to the physician during the summer so medication can be given to staff on the first day of school or the day prior. Keep in mind, this form must be completed by the parent/guardian AND physician for the medication (prescription OR over the counter) to be taken during school hours (including OVERNIGHT field trips).

Attendance Corner - Everything you need to know!!
School Avoidance is sometimes called school refusal or school phobia and is a growing problem among school-aged children. Most students go to school, even if they complain about it. But 10 - 15 percent of students are estimated to miss 10 percent or more days each school year, making them “chronically absent.”
Tips for Concerned Parents:
Talk with your child about the reasons why they do not want to go to school. Be sympathetic, supportive, and understanding of why they are upset. Try to resolve any stressful situations the two of you identify as causing his worries or symptoms.
Acknowledge that you understand your child's concerns, but insist on their immediate return to school. The longer your child stays home, the more difficult their eventual return will be. Explain that they are in good health and their physical symptoms are probably due to concerns other things. Let your child know that school attendance is required by law. They will continue to exert some pressure upon you to stay home, but you must remain determined to get your child back in school.
Discuss your child's school avoidance with the school staff, including his or her teacher, the principal, and the school nurse. Share with them your plans for your child's return to school and enlist their support and assistance.
Make a commitment to be extra firm on school mornings, when children complain most about their symptoms. Keep discussions about physical symptoms or anxieties to a minimum. For example, do not ask your child how they feel. If they are well enough to be up and around the house, then they are well enough to attend school.
You can request help from the school staff for assistance with your child while they are at school. A school nurse or secretary can care for your child should they become symptomatic, and encourage their return to the classroom.
If a problem like a school bully or an unreasonable teacher is the cause of your child's anxiety, become an advocate for your child and discuss these problems with the school staff. The teacher or principal may need to make some adjustments to relieve the pressure on your child in the classroom or on the playground.
If your child stays home, be sure they are safe and comfortable, but do not give them any special treatment. Your child's symptoms should be treated with consideration and understanding. If your child's complaints warrant it, they should stay in bed. However, your child's day should not be a holiday. There should be no special snacks and no visitors, and he or she should be supervised.
Your child may need to see a doctor when he or she stays home because of a physical illness. Reasons to remain home might include not just complaints of discomfort but recognizable symptoms: a temperature greater than 101 degrees, vomiting, diarrhea, a rash, a hacking cough, an earache or a toothache.
Help your child develop independence by encouraging activities with other children outside the home. These can include clubs, sports activities, and overnights with friends.
