Parents,
Next week is Spring Break - a great time for our kids to rest, relax and get ready for the final nine weeks of the school year. I’m planning on reading a few books over the break, and I hope your kids are too. Many of us will be traveling with family, others will be enjoying a “staycation” right here in Auburn. Whether you are traveling or staying home I want to encourage you to have intentional conversations with your children. I have three children myself, (two are teenagers) so I have to be very intentional in finding ways to get the conversation moving. I use conversation cards or pull family dinner questions off the internet. With fun questions like, “If you owned a restaurant, what would you serve?, What would the décor look like?” or “If you could invite one person from history to dinner with our family, who would you invite?” I find that everyone can share an idea, and we can all participate in the conversation.
Another way to interact with your children is through board games. While video games dominate this generation, you would be surprised how much kids love to gather around a board game. So many lessons are taught by playing a game – taking turns, organization and sportsmanship just to name a few.
I hope you and your family has a restful and relaxing Spring Break.

Art Action with Mr. Daniel
We're looking forward to an exciting time in Art for the month of March!
Our fourth grade art students are exploring the works of Pablo Picasso through their development of "Cubic Fruit Still-Lifes." They're using skill, craftsmanship, form, space and complementary color schemes to render these compositions. We're also exploring how Picasso's painting style changed over the period of his life.
Our fifth grade art students are using their creative ability, skill, craftsmanship, space, form, texture and color to develop "Complementary Doughnuts." We're exploring how analogous colors. as well as complementary colors. are used within a work of art. We're also continuing to build upon our foundation of creating the appearance of three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional surface. We're taking a look at the works of William Turner.

In Guidance class we are finishing up with our career development lessons. Students have learned what a career is and the major factors in choosing a career in their future. Education is continuously being stressed and graduating high school is a must! Students are to be proactive, as they get to choose how far they decide to go with their educational pursuit after high school. The sky is the limit; please challenge your students to give their best every day in school. The higher your expectations, the better results you will see.
We will begin our lessons on Diversity in March. This concept refers to understanding that each individual is unique/special, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Cultural diversity is important because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly consist of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first we must have a level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation. Please spend some time talking about diversity with your children.
Quote of the month:
“When I look at you through my eyes, I think that we are different. When I see you through my heart, I know that we are the same.”

During our dance unit, students learned the Swedish folk dance “Gustav’s Skol” and performed the dance during S.T.E.A.M. night. Students were challenged to sing the Valentine’s Day song “Heel, Toe, One Two Three” while dancing steps and changing partners around a circle.
Fourth graders continue to build on their music knowledge by learning new chords to strum on the ukulele. Students have now learned chords C7, F, and C. Our biggest challenge has been playing chords while singing songs like “Rain, Rain Go Away," “Bow Wow Wow," and “Star Light, Star Bright."
Fifth grade students made huge progress this month in their recorder playing! Most students have earned their white belt and many have earned yellow and orange. This month we added guest student conductors. These volunteers create their own melodies for other students to play on their recorders by rhythmically pointing to different notes with the conductor’s baton.
