3rd Annual Bookmark Contest
The Wanamaker library and art department collaborated on their 3rd annual bookmark contest. The theme for this year was to promote a favorite book character. Students designed their bookmarks during art class, then the voting began! The winning bookmarks were chosen by students, faculty, and staff members. Each student received a copy of the winning bookmark in their grade level. There were some fantastic designs--nice work, WE students!
LIBRARY AND STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM GRANTS
Thank you to the Foundation for their generous contribution and for helping us to update our library resources!
2nd graders participate in Global Read Aloud
Other ways that we connected included Skype and Google Hang Out sessions to share read alouds and discussions related to those stories, Padlet (an online bulletin board) where we shared our ideas, and Snail Mail by writing and exchanging postcards with our new friends. We also have a couple of new books to add to our library because we exchanged books about our respective states with our buddy classes.
As part of the Picture Book Author Study we studied the indigenous people of Canada, learning more about their culture, traditions, and languages. Our buddy class from Ottawa, Canada shared their Medicine Wheel projects with us during one of our Skype sessions with them.
In order for our students to learn more about the indigenous people of our own state of Kansas, we rented a trunk (The Uses of the Buffalo) from the Kansas State Historical Society. The students were able to see the many ways our Native tribes used the different parts of the buffalo. It is amazing how inventive they were with their resources!
When asked what she liked best about the Global Read Aloud, 2nd grader, Arna, responded, "We got to meet new people." Her classmate, Akemi, followed with, "We got to see their actual faces."
Thank you to the 2nd grade teachers for collaborating with me to bring this awesome experience to our students!
Book Characters Fill the Library Pumpkin Patch
When asked what she liked the most about the contest, Scarlett (Kindergarten) said, "I liked that it was a competition, and we got to use our skills." The judges all lamented that it was so hard to judge because of the quality of the entries. The students awarded first, second, and third place for their pumpkins received a small prize while all participants took home a laminated Halloween bookmark and a big Tootsie Roll. Thank you to all our students and families who participated in the contest and for helping to make the library such a fun place to be this month!
