DUAL CREDIT COURSES OFFER MANY OPTIONS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Start as a sophomore in college? Completing college in three years is a possibility for Parke Heritage High School students who enroll in the dual credit courses through Ivy Tech Community College. This program offers students the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits in the same course. By taking these dual-credit courses, students have the option to graduate from college in three years and to help reduce post-secondary education costs.
Dual credit courses are taught by the high school staff members; however, some classes are taught by Ivy Tech personnel. These courses are accelerated programs that enable students to earn college credits along with their high school diplomas.
“Students must be willing to work hard to complete this program,” said Mrs. Laura Hayes, Ivy Tech Lead College Connection Coach. “They must meet prerequisites to be enrolled. These include being college ready, which is determined by their PSAT or Accuplacer scores.”
There are several options that students have within this program. They can complete 30 credits of dual-credit classes within the six specified areas. These areas include quantitative reasoning, speaking and listening, written communication, humanistic and artistic, scientific, and social and behavioral. While the names of these courses may make them seem difficult, they are the basic ones for the freshman year of college- science, math, social studies, fine arts, English and speech. Students may also opt to enroll in agricultural and business classes that are offered at PH.
Other option areas include the courses offered through the Wabash River and Career and Technical Education (WRCTE) Program. These courses vary and can offer students hands-on learning options. They include Automotive, Computer Science, Health Sciences, Robotics, Visual Communication and Welding.
“The Welding and Computer Science classes are taught by Ivy Tech instructors,” said Mrs. Hayes. “Students can earn an Ivy Tech Certificate in a high wage, high demand area while in high school.”
These dual-credit class options provide students with the opportunity to experience college classes as well as hands-on learning. There are 50 PH seniors who are enrolled in the dual credit classes.
“Many students have enrolled in the Health Careers classes to see if that is an area they really want to pursue,” said Mrs. Hayes. “It gives them the opportunity to see if that is a career area for them before enrolling in college classes.”
Parke Heritage is one of the few high schools in the area that offers the General Education Core Degree. For the 2018-19 school year, there are 34 seniors who will be earning the technical certificate. When the program began in 2016, there were 10 students; 18 in 2017 and 24 in 2018. The program has grown as students are learning about this as an option when scheduling their classes.
“Parke Heritage is fortunate to have teachers who are credentialed to provide these class options for the students,” said Mrs. Hayes. “Not all schools provide the wide range of courses that are offered here.”
As the Ivy Tech Lead College Connection Coach, Mrs. Hayes helps the students put all the pieces together. She meets with each senior to assist them with the decision of Enroll/Enlist/Employ. She helps to guide them through their senior year and to assist them with their post-graduation needs. This varies from helping them with college choices, to assisting them with employment skills or to helping them enlist into military service.
If you would like more information about these programs, please contact Mrs. Laura Hayes at hayesl@ncp.k12.in.us or 765-569-4108.
There is also a board with each senior student’s name that allows them to update their plans following high school graduation.

DENTAL HEALTH CARE
In honor of dental health month, the students in Mrs. Alexa Tyrrell's kindergarten class did an experiment on what soda/pop does to our teeth.
After letting eggs (whose shells are similar to teeth) sit in milk, water, and soda, the students made observations about how the shells changed. Then, they brushed each one and looked for differences. The class concluded that soda/sugar is bad for our teeth and that while brushing helped get some of the color away there was some staining we couldn’t get off.
Water and milk were good for our teeth, though we did note the little bit of natural sugars in milk made a few spots, but were easily brushed away. The class talked about how milk builds strong bones and teeth and that it is a great choice to drink, but to remember to brush your teeth twice a day!

MS STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT MUMMIFICATION
Students had previously learned about the mummification process, and were able to identify the purpose of natron. Students even enjoyed eating some apples prior to the experiment.
A special thanks to the Coffing Bros. Orchard who donated the apples for the mummification process and for the students' enjoyment.
