A message from the Athletic Director

Hello Silver Knights! This year, the scene for high school athletics is definitely a new one. It brings several challenges as we navigate the requirements and recommendations that have been put in place for the 360 member schools of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) as we look for opportunities for student athletes to compete. As the Athletic Director at SHS, that is my ultimate goal this year: to do whatever is necessary for our student athletes so that they can compete in some form or fashion at the high school level, representing our Silver Knight community. I know that not all will agree with the requirements and recommendations, but, in order to keep our kids in school and on the field of play, we will do what is mandated/asked of us by the State of CO, CHSAA and the Weld RE4 School District to provide them the opportunity to play the sports they love while wearing our school colors. We need your cooperation in complying with the Spectator Expectations while attending athletic events at SHS. Understand that these are the Weld RE4 expectations; other Longs Peak League schools that we compete with as league members, or the schools of the Northern Colorado Athletic Conference (NCAC) that we have close relationships with, which includes Windsor HS, all have similar expectations that may vary slightly.

The two most important expectations during this year will be:

  1. That all spectators must wear masks while attending athletic contests and
  2. Athletic facilities will be restricted to a given number of people in the facility at any given time. That includes players, coaches, officials, game workers and fans. This limitation may severely restrict the number of spectators allowed, in some cases to two fans per player and in some cases to no spectators at all. Schools are looking for ways to broadcast games if possible. (Look for more information on that at a later time)

Please help us support our student athletes by complying with all schools' expectations for spectators and players so that our student athletes can represent Severance High School on the athletic field of competition this year! Go Silver Knights!!

You can find the military opt-out letter HERE. If you do not want your student's information given out to military recruiters, this form must be signed and returned to Advisory no later than September 8th.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Severance High School Counseling Office at (970) 833-7118. Thank you.

Since the class of 2022 was unable to take the PSAT last year, the district is offering an optional PSAT on October 14, 2020. The deadline to sign up for the PSAT is quickly approaching. If you are interested in signing up for the PSAT, please submit the following form as soon as possible: SAT and PSAT FALL 2020 Testing Interest (MUST BE FILLED OUT WITH STUDENTS WELDRE4 EMAIL)

This test is a prereq for the national merit scholarship and many other scholarship opportunities going forward.

German Corner

LABOR DAY IN GERMANYAs we prepare for Labor Day weekend, I thought it appropriate that this week’s German Corner introduce you to how Labor Day (Tag der Arbeit) is celebrated in Germany. Germany began observing “Tag der Arbeit” in 1890 when hundreds of thousands of people across Europe protested on May 1, 1890, demanding better working conditions and an eight-hour day. Labor Day was established as a German official holiday in 1933 after the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers’ Party) rose to power. It was supposed to symbolize unity between the state and the working classes. In Berlin, one of the largest marches campaigning for workers' rights nationwide takes place on May 1st in the Kreuzberg district. The marches have taken a violent turn in the past, but nowadays, events such as Berlin Myfest have turned the day into more of a festival than a fight. In the U.S. Labor Day is known more BBQs and the end of summer; in Germany it remains focused on the plight of the working class. Bis nächste Woche!
