Thankful...
This next week we are headed into the Thanksgiving season. At my house we have a custom of saying what we are thankful for at the dinner table. My family adds emphasis on the act of thanks at the Thanksgiving table as we tend to reflect on the entire year. This year I am thankful for many things. I am thankful for my job, especially as it is at Churchill High School. I am thankful for my partner Leah as she is a constant source of support and inspiration. I am also thankful for my two wonderful children who never cease to amaze me with their talent and creativity.
I hope that you and your family find time to enjoy each other and find thanks for the many blessings that life extends unto us. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
In The Know
TalentEd Student Growth Goals - Thanks to all who have completed your goals. I will be sending an email this next week to remind those who have yet to submit their goals and see when we can meet to discuss what is getting in the way of getting them done. Thanks for submitting these goals as they help set the tone for the year.
Important Points at End of Term - This is an excellent time to communicate with families to remind them how much time (or in this case lack thereof) is left in the term. For many students, these last few weeks will be critical for submitting required work, attending tutoring sessions and accessing homework support. Please remind students and parents of the importance of grades at this time of the year and do everything you can to provide them with time and support. One of the best ways to provide this level of communication is to ensure that your Synergy grades are up to date.
Finals Schedule - As we approach our finals week please keep in mind that it is very important that students do not sit for 5 hours of finals on the same day. Please connect with your department mates and identify how and when you will be offering your final projects, exams, etc.
Hazardous Weather - The weather is mild now, but winter will be here before we know it. Please familiarize yourself with the information in the attached 2018–19 Hazardous Weather Memo (below) so you will be prepared if the district closes or delays schools due to snow, ice or other hazards this winter. Most importantly, you'll need to know how to find out about a weather day and when you are expected to report to work. Reporting expectations vary for different employee groups and positions.
On days when school is in session on the regular schedule, the district will NOT make an announcement: No news = no change.
In the event of a weather closure or delay, the decision will be communicated as quickly as possible through local news media, text alert via Twitter, Facebook, district website, and an email directly to all staff, normally all before 6:15 a.m. Staff, parents and students are encouraged to subscribe to receive text alerts (send a text message to 40404 saying FOLLOW 4JWEATHER ) to get the news as quickly and easily as possible. Please see www.4j.lane.edu/weather for more information.

Radon Testing
To continue to provide safe, healthy facilities where students learn, grow and play, the district will begin testing for radon in schools on November 26, 2018. A new state law requires that all districts in Oregon test school buildings for radon before January 1, 2021.
What is radon? Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from the soil. Radon can work its way into buildings, including homes and schools, through cracks in the ground and openings in foundations or under structures. Breathing high levels of radon over a long period of time can cause lung cancer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind smoking. You can’t see, smell, or taste radon.
How do you test for radon? The only way to know if a building has elevated radon is to use specialized testing equipment. The test is non-invasive and poses no danger to staff or students. It consists of placing a cardboard packet for several days in rooms that are in contact with the ground. (See photos attached.) *Please do not tamper with or move these test kits, and keep exterior windows and doors closed (except for normal entry/exit) during the testing period.
When will Churchill be tested? All schools will be tested, but not at the same time. The first 3-weeks of radon testing is scheduled and can be viewed on the district website. We will update the information when the additional dates and schools are available. We aim to finish testing by the end of March. When the time is near for your school’s testing, we will let your building administrators know, so that they can share the information with staff and families.
Looking Forward

Kudos
Keith Fjordbeck - Thank you Keith for being the single individual who opens Churchill everyday, silences alarms, blows leaves, shovels snow, greets visitors, fixes broken things, responds to protein spills, etc. Your service is genuine, strong, and so appreciated. Thank you also for your leadership. Your example rubs off and the building and staff are better for it. Another big thank you to the evening custodial staff who work long and hard to make our school a better place: Scott Crampton, Nick Huffman, Dorothy Stolsig, & Dan Adney.
Erin Crews - A big thank you to Erin Crews who goes out of her way to bring the ocean to her kids. I see so much passion in your work. It is this passion that helps build connections and relationships with students. You do such a great job of this and the end result is a number of students
Ladies Soccer - I would like to take a moment to recognize that the women's soccer team played in the "State Championship" this last Saturday and although they did not win they had an amazing season and accomplished something that hasn't happened in 28 years! We are so proud of your journey and the PRIDE that you bring to school.
