Greeting Shaw Community,

We are excited that our PEER Lead, Claire Kooyahoema has accepted the position of office manager at Shaw. Claire has served our PEER community for 21 years but is up for a new challenge. A new PEER Lead will be joining us soon. I am so thankful that Claire was willing to take on a new role! Please be patient with her as she makes the transition.

Big thank you to Declan McGrath, Jackson May and Gabriel Gonzales for representing Shaw at the district spelling bee on Wednesday. While we did not place this year, a lot of new learning was experienced by all our spellers, and we all know how to spell “scruples” now!

Afterschool classes begin this week. While Friday, January 20th was the cut off for registration, some vendors may still accept late requests. Check with them if your child is still interested in one of the many opportunities offered. We have also added an American Sign Language class. See flyer below.

We hope you will join us Tuesday evening for “Transition Night”. Please see attached flyer for more information.

Wishing you the best,

Principal Engdall

Hello Shaw Families!! Try to find the awe in everyday life. Awe is the feeling we get when something good stops us in our tracks. It could be your child putting their dishes in the dishwasher. It could be the beautiful pinks and oranges in the sunrise enjoyed in quiet. Seeing a kind gesture being done for someone. It could be seeing a child take their first steps or say their first words.

Savor these moments. Keep it with you so that when you are discouraged or feel like giving up, you can remember the good in the world.

There are a lot of animals around the Shaw campus.

Goats, fish, tortoises, dogs, chickens, a stapler and more!

Ms. Stephanie's class has a goldfish named Jimmy Mcflapper. They have had him in their classroom for 4 months. The children in the classroom learn about goldfish, they also draw pictures of him, and feed him. Jimmy Mcflapper is a very good fish and everyone in Mrs. Stephanie’s class loves him!

Ms. Craig’s class has a tortoise named Herky. Herky is well-fed and taken care of. Herky’s breed is an African Tortoise. They have had him for about 9 years! Herky is well-loved and is well taken care of by their classroom.

Ms. Hess' class has a pet fish. He is a Betta fish named Mr. Bubbles. The children wanted a pet and started jumping up and down when he arrived! They feed him and take care of him.

Now let's talk about the campus cats. One of the cats is named is Cosmit. She has black stripes and has been at Shaw for 6 years. The other cat is a male named Squeakers. In December there was a calico cat that had babies in our tortoise habitat. Ms. Campbell adopted the kittens and Ms. Wahid then adopted the mama cat.

Mr. Leinbach’s class has a beautiful stapler named Stapleton (yes, Stapleton is an actual stapler that the children decided to make a class pet). He is a feisty and knowledgeable stapler. He really likes when you pet on top of his head. It was an honor to meet Stapleton.

Ms. Chan's class has two dogs named Joe and Kenzie. They are both adorable tail-wagging dogs. One of the students said they liked the dogs because whenever they were around they felt calm and happier.

That’s some of the animals on our campus. Do you think they’re cool too?

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

I am writing this with very limited sleep at 2 pm on a Friday afternoon just after an overnight field trip with the middle school so I apologize for any errors or lack of clarity. The field trip was a huge success! We saw so many cool animals and, to my surprise, some of the middle schoolers’ favorites were the zoo goats!

After the goats arrived, we changed gears on our January block. We shelved the composting block and are learning about the magnificent world of goats and ruminants. Ruminants are a suborder of animals that include, sheep, cows, deer, elk, bison, giraffe, and hippos. The list goes on. They are grouped by their distinct digestive system; they have four stomachs! These ruminants need four stomachs to digest all the cellulose they consume. Our flimsy human stomachs could never process this much cellulose. That is part of what makes goats so special. They are currently grazing on our invasive Bermuda grass around the garden. Thanks goats!

Parent workday is right around the corner! We will be building a path along the perimeter of the field garden. I am asking parents to donate flagstone or any type of block. This includes pavers and old terracotta pieces. Please email me if you have any block or know of a supplier. And sign up for our workday by following the link below: https://signup.com/go/vkqxzML

There will be pulled pork sandwiches for lunch thanks to one of our parents, Lenny. See you all there!

I have included a flyer with the newsletter for a marmalade class on Jan 29th from 1-4pm. Some of my fellow garden friends are hosting the event in Scottsdale. If you are interested in learning how to preserve your citrus through jamming, then please go register. They are a well of knowledge!

Here is my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org

Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells, and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office, except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bottle cap bin.

We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
