What's happening at the winery
They made a stop in Haro, since it's the capital of La Rioja Wine Region. There were several events planned for each day and then back on the road. The meals and wine tastings were incredible. I do love a good Rioja wine! There's also a lot of history to be observed, such as the Conde de los Andes Winery. That was Ernest Hemmingway's favorite winery, where he gathered his thoughts and wrote his famous novels. Imagine that for a minute.
The next couple of days they were visiting various wineries and historical sites and great restaurants. They also made a stop in Guijuelo for a tour of a "Jamon" factory (renowned Spanish ham) and then off to the medieval town of Caceres with an overnight in a 14th century Renaissance hotel. That's the town where Silvia was born and raised. Pretty special.
Then they set off for Merida, the town built by the Roman Emperor Octavio Augusto in the year 25 AD. A tour guide showed them the city.
The tour ends there and everyone will be on their way back home. Below are some of the pictures I've received during the trip. What a adventure! This is only an abbreviated description of all the activities and places they visited. For the full schedule, visit our website under events. There's been some talk of a follow up Spain tour somewhere down the line. I'll keep you posted on details as they emerge. There'll be more pictures in the June Newsletter - Stay tuned.

What kind of wines do they make in Spain?
Rias Baixas - This area is mostly known for it's whites wines and mainly Albarino. It's light and delicate like a Sauvignon Blanc.
Rioja - The best known region for red wines, primarily Tempranillo and Grancha.
Priorat - This area produces BIG, heavy red wines, made from Carinena and Grancha Grapes.
Rueda - They produce a white wine called Verdejo (not to be confused with the Verdelho which Trent makes - That's a different grape altogether).
Toro - This is another Tempranillo area. Big and red and delicious wines.
That's just a quick summary. Spain has many more smaller regions that produce a variety of great wines. Look for them them the next time you visit your favorite wine shop. You'll find them to be inexpensive and very approachable. The whites are light and fruity and the reds are big and concentrated - great with red meats on the BBQ.
