First Buck of the Season

Join us this week as we try to catch the first buck of the season. Tomorrow, the volleyball teams head to Buckhorn to defend the Nation. Later this week, the football team will head there to take the field!

Friday is Half-Day for Students

Just a reminder that September 4th is a half-day of school for students. We will serve breakfast and lunch on this day as normal.



Car riders and drivers will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m.

Bus riders will be dismissed at 12:00 noon.



November 10th, February 12th and April 15th will also be half-days for the students. On these days, only students will be dismissed early, and employees will participate in professional development for the remainder of the day.

What the Dog Knows: Scent, Science, and the Amazing Ways Dogs Perceive the World

The SARTEC K-9 Unit is an all-volunteer unit based in Madison County, North Alabama. The Unit specializes in land and water searches using certified air scenting, man trailing, and cadaver dogs. The Unit can assist in searches for missing persons (alive or deceased) in wilderness, urban, disaster, collapsed building and water settings. Unit members have worked many times with Law Enforcement on Human Remains Detection cases. Last week they came to visit Hazel Green's forensic science and Medical Academy students to show what really goes on behind the scenes and how their fields of study can be applied after graduation.

The Hazel Green High Spanish Club

The Spanish Club will hold its first interest meeting for all new members on Tuesday, September 1st. We would love to welcome back all former members as well. Please meet in room C109 with Mrs. Smith from 8:00-8:20 AM or from 3:30-3:50 PM. Choose the time that is most convenient for you. See you then!

Scholars Bowl MMXVI: Pump You Up

With knowledge, that is! If you are interested in participating in Scholars’ Bowl this school year, but are not currently in the class, please attend an after school interest meeting in Mr. Hunter’s room, S112, on Wednesday, September 2. Every year our school has multiple teams that compete, and there are several spots available for those who can think fast and have a desire to learn more!

Hazel Green Writers and Artists

Check out The Green Room, our new online literary magazine. You can submit your artwork, short stories, poems, or other writings for publication. Go to http://hghsgreenroom.weebly.com/ for submission requirements. You can also read submissions from other HGHS students who helped create the magazine last semester.

Senior Proof Orders Due Soon

In case you missed out, Bill Miller Photographers came by on August 26 and dropped off books for Senior Proofs. They will be back again on September 8 from 11:25 to 1:15 PM in the cafeteria to take orders!

Homecoming Coming Soon

Homecoming is not far off! The dance will kick off the week on September 19th. Tickets for the Homecoming Dance will be sold each Friday during lunch on the cafeteria stage or purchase them at www.myschoolfees.com. Admission is $15 for singles and $25 for couples. Tickets will not be available at the gate as they have been in previous years, so it's important to purchase them ahead of time. Students from other schools may not attend. Themes for the week are coming soon!

Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.


Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend
- Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.

1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.

2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.

3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.

Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors will receive a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors during school. All students are strongly encouraged to utilize this service provided to us. For more information, visit http://www.actstudent.org/onlineprep/.


First Priority/FCS
meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 in the Black Box Theatre. All students are welcome to attend.


Parenting Assistance Line:
PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.


Recycle:
Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.


Reward Cards:
Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit:
Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.

(Hazel Green Pharmacy Loyalty Key Tag Program) Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your loyalty key tag when you visit Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you purchase a Prescription/Gift/OTC have them swipe your tag. HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a loyalty key tag. Just stop by the main office to pick one up.
