Social Science Majors at UC: Individual Options, Collective Impact
From UC Counselors Bulletin (But can be applied to most colleges)
Now more than ever college graduates need to enter the work force with a deep understanding of the connection between human behavior, social systems and structures, and cultural expression and traditions. Confronting the deep issues our society faces here at home as well as abroad will require critical thinking, analytical ability, cultural fluency, meaningful communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to civic engagement and social responsibility. The social sciences can equip students with the tools and skills to address humanity’s most intractable problems and contribute to shaping our collective future
Here is how one social science major can connect to a career:
Did you know that students with a degree in American Studies have moved into careers as diverse as journalism, law, medicine, law enforcement, environmental planning, teaching, library science, museum curatorship and business?

Update Naviance Resume Regularly!
Keep organized by entering all of your activities and accomplishments in your Naviance Resume.
Super Important Step: Write a reflection of the activity in the DESCRIPTION BOX
Include:
Why do you do this activity/What do you get from this activity?
What did you learn from this activity?
Are you making an impact in school or in your community? (use concrete examples- fundraised 300.00 instead of just “fundraised)
THEN
After you enter in all of your information, reflect on how these activities/awards will help you reach your long-term college goals.
Small actions, over the course of time, are evidence of your commitment and responsibility to what you care about.
Does your resume include community service?
If you are thinking about applying for scholarships as a senior, a lot of the local scholarships are based on a sustained community service activity. It is not about collecting hours but showing you are committed to the program of your choice.
Ninth Graders: Ms Rocha and Ms Ignaitis will be presenting the Naviance resume in March but you can get started on your own too!
What Does Expected Family Contribution (EFC) Mean ?
From Federal Student Aid (studentaid.gov)
The EFC is calculated according to a formula established by law. Your family's taxed and untaxed income, assets, and benefits (such as unemployment or Social Security) all could be considered in the formula. Also considered are your family size and the number of family members who will attend college or career school during the year. The EFC Formula guide shows exactly how an EFC is calculated.
