Statement from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Barry Townsend
The Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees and our administrators believe that it is always in our students' best interests to maximize the amount of time that our teachers and students are in the classroom, teaching and learning. It is in that spirit that the administration proposed that the Board consider using two days from our unusually long, 18.5-day winter break to make up 2 of the 6 instruction days missed this school year due to inclement weather.
The Board values the input of our community, and after taking into careful consideration the concerns expressed for the potential for this proposal to seriously disrupt the holiday plans of our students’ and staff’s families, has decided to vote against this recommendation and will keep the current winter break schedule in place. Instead, the Board will take advantage of the ability granted to it by state law to forgive days 4-6 of the missed time. This option is only available to the Board since days 1-3 are being made up utilizing the built-in make-up days in the 2018-19 calendar.
If we have additional school closures during the 2018-19 school year, the options for making those days up will be limited, and include using days from spring break, Saturdays, extending school days by no less than an hour a day, extending the school year beyond the graduation dates, or petitioning the State Board of Education/General Assembly to waive the additional days.
