Principal's Message
Dear St. Maria Goretti Catholic School Families,
What a fun and festive week it has been. The students came back to a school decorated for Advent and Christmas Around the World. I am so pleased to see that our manger is getting filled with the good deeds hay our students are completing.
This Thursday, December 9th is On the Border Dine out night. Please be sure when dining to mention you are with SMGCS so we can get credit for your meal purchase. All proceeds will be given to the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur. These ladies founded our school almost 70 years ago. We are excited to be able to give something back to them.
SMGCS is hosting the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, December 12th. We are looking for readers, greeters, and altar servers. Please join us for Mass if you can. See the Sign-Up Link below.
Junior High midterms will begin soon. Teachers will provide students with reviews for their exams. We will have a special schedule to allow more time for the students to take these important exams. You will find that schedule in this Trojan Times. Please note that there will be exams on MONDAY, December 13, 2021.
Tuesday, December 14th at 6:30 in the Church, our PreK-3rd students will be performing "The Gift of Advent". Mrs. Richards will be sending out more detailed information. Thursday, December 16th at 6:30 in the gym, our band students will be performing their Christmas show, "A Not So Silent Night."
Friday, December 17th we will be taking our students on a trip around the world to look at how other countries celebrate Christmas. Then we will have homeroom Christmas parties. There will NOT be SMEED on December 17th. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up at 12:15 on that day.
Thank you to those who have completed our survey. This data is so helpful in preparing for our Accreditation and the rewriting of our Strategic Plan.
I am overwhelmed by the response I got for donations for our St. Nicholas festivities on Monday. THANK YOU so much for supporting my ideas and our students. All students will receive a hot dog lunch on Monday to celebrate St. Nicholas day. (see the flyer below) If you feel your child will need more food than what will be provided, please send additional lunch items.
Please keep our teachers in your prayers.
St. Maria Goretti, Pray for Us!
Blessings,
Amy Utendorf, M.Ed.

December Virtue: Generosity
St. Nicholas - Feast Day December 6th
St. Nicholas was a bishop who was always giving to the poor. He heard about a family with three daughters who had no money to get married. Each time one of the girls was ready to get married, St. Nicholas left them gold. He never told them that he had given the money, but did it in secret.
St. Mary Magdalene - Feast Day July 22nd
St. Mary Magdalene was looked upon as a sinner. Jesus healed her of seven devils and many people think she is the woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears. St. Mary Magdalene became one of Jesus' closest followers and was one of a few people besides the Blessed Mother and St. John the Apostle who stayed with Jesus during His crucifixion and death.
St. Maximilian Kolbe - Feast Day August 14th
St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan Friar who was born in Poland and was living there when World War II broke out. He was captured by the Germans and sent to the concentration camp of Auschwitz. He volunteered to give up his life, taking the place of another prisoner who was condemned to die.
SMG Spirit Store Closes TONIGHT at Midnight - Dec. 5th
Our Spirit Store is now open until midnight today, December 5th. Everything will be delivered to the school by December 17th. SMGCS swag makes great Christmas gifts!

The 8th-grade class has been working with Mrs. Pick to create history fair projects. On Saturday, ten of our students sent their projects to Nolan Catholic to complete with the other Diocesan Catholic Schools. Two of our students placed! Last Week at SMGCS
Faith Families
Seventh grader, Alex, led us in opening prayer and Kindergarten led us in the pledges. After reviewing November's virtue and saints, Decembers virtue of generosity was introduced by Mrs. Vasquez. To practice our generosity, students are encouraged to participate in the sock drive running through December 13th. Each student will donate new socks in their size which will be donated to the Padre Pio House, our Parish ministry. We discussed the three saints we will focus on during December who exhibited the virtue of generosity. Sara B. closed the assembly with the song Emmanuel.
Students returned to their Faith Families following the assembly where they created ornaments for a Jessie Tree which will be displayed in each classroom. Additionally, they were encouraged to document good deeds during the month, record them on yellow strips of paper and place them in baby Jesus' manger. We expect his manger to be overflowing with "good deeds hay" by the time of his arrival.

A Sweet Friendship Refreshes the Soul ~ Proverbs 27:9

Water Bottle Filling Station
Over the Thanksgiving break, our new water bottle filling station was installed! We are grateful for this legacy gift left from our 2021 graduating class.
Please send your child with a water bottle daily which they may refill at the new water bottle filling station. We no longer have a supply of water bottles to give out to students as we did during COVID.
Christmas Store
The SMG Christmas Store is a favorite tradition which allows students to shop for family and friends. Our beloved parent volunteers were on hand to help students select the perfect gift and wrap it with festive paper. Students left with a bag of presents to put under the tree.

Joy to the World
In the spirit of the season, Advent wreaths and Jesse Trees can be found in classroom throughout the building.

Advent Calendar
Art teacher, Allie Jamison, generously devoted her time to create a beautiful advent calendar displayed in the school hallway. Each day, we open one of the festively decorated packages to reveal a bible verse. Follow us on SMG Facebook during the weekends and Christmas vacation to see each day as it is revealed.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium
This week the children are learning about the Annunciation, the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would divinely conceive a son to be called Jesus.

Kindergarten
The St. George Faith Family made an entire set of Jesse Tree ornaments for the KB class tree! This was a great act of generosity, our monthly virtue.
