Notes from the Principal
Dear Parents,
We have some engineers and computer scientists among us! Computer Education Week proved quite the success, and students throughout our building heard from and learned about a variety of coding experiences and opportunities. We also made it to UNCC with half our 7th Grade, and I’ve learned that food options are HIGH on the list of “look-fors” when these students are selecting their university options. I’m pleased to report that UNCC and their Nutritional Services scored high marks! The other half of 7th Grade participated in the Butterfly Project at JCC, and certainly that experience left a lasting impression. We’ll invert the experiences next semester so ALL our students will benefit from these trips.
Congratulations to Daniel Wei for winning the WMS Spelling Bee! Our school rep and county competitor last year, we’re returning to the competition for some unfinished business. Congrats also to Aiden Prine, our Geography Bee winner! Our basketball teams are persevering through some adversity right now, as both teams took tough losses away at SVMS this week. We’re back at it away at Piedmont on Tuesday and then back home for the final game before break on Thursday. Look out for our 7pm 8th Grade Band Concert at WHS Tuesday night, and then experience a novel “Musical Theater Showcase” event with Mrs. Cipolletti and Company—also at WHS—at 6:30pm Thursday night.
The Wildcat Word has landed…and it’s awesome! With “balance” as our inaugural theme, you’ll find a little of everything. We have art and student poetry, sports recaps and athlete features, teacher insights, and perhaps my favorite this go-round: recipes! Look out for Vincent Lee’s Peachy Chicken Picante & Rice or Mrs. Gobble’s grilled shrimp tacos with avocado. With all the work they put it around here, it’s important to properly nourish their bodies! Absence/Early Dismissal
Parents, if your child will be leaving school early, please send a note to the homeroom teacher with the dismissal time. Students who leave before or arrive after 12:15 pm will be marked absent for the day. There are no dismissals allowed after 3:30 pm. If you send a note for your student to be in the office at 3:30 pm and you arrive after the 3:30 pm deadline, if your student is not in the office waiting for you the office staff will not call your student out of class. Also, all early dismissal and late arrivals from medical appointments must have a note from the doctor in order to be excused.
When students are absent it is not necessary to call the school. Be sure to send a note to the homeroom teacher stating why the student was not in school. UCPS will notify you through Connect-Ed if your student was
absent.
