Montessori ideas....the building of true self-esteem
Self Esteem, we need it!
Our schools and families want the best for our future, our kids. We want and need our kids to be confident, empowered and independent. These great traits come from children and adults who have a positive self esteem. We can all agree on this point but how we get there is up for many debates and conversations. Students who attend Montessori schools with supportive families can achieve a positive self image. But how?
What Self Esteem is not...
There are many things today that get us off track of really creating self-esteem. Some of these include:
stickers, reward charts, giving grades students have not earned and creating systems where students are not seen for their special gifts and talents.
How do we build self esteem in Montessori?
True self-esteem does not come from rewards and words of praise from others. Self-esteem comes from self-pride when a task has been completed by themself. This is especially true if the task or work was difficult. When a student has to stick with a task and push through the hard learning, the success is even sweeter! Self esteem is build little by little, task by task until the child has build a true feeling of power and a "can do" attitude.

Learning independence is the key to self esteem
A key part of success in a Montessori classroom is to build a child's level of independence. Showing children all of the steps to a task and then allowing them to complete the task by themself builds independence and self-esteem.
