F.R. Haythorne Track and Field Day - Parent Information
Our school Track and Field Meet will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. All of our students will be at Strathcona Athletic Park for the day and will return to the school at the end of the day for regular bussing and dismissal. There will be no classes or activities scheduled at F.R. Haythorne on May 18, 2022. Students are expected to attend and take part in the track meet to meet their curriculum requirements for the physical education program.
Parents are asked to give a note to your student’s Physical Education teacher or contact the school at 780-467-3800 with regards to any circumstances (e.g., illness or injury) preventing your student from competing at the school track meet. Students are expected to attend the full day and may not leave the grounds, as this is designated as a closed campus event for our students. Students are reminded that this is a regular school day, but in a different location. The same guidelines for conduct, behaviour and attendance are in effect.
Students will be eating lunch at SAP, and they may bring their own lunch or purchase food items from the concession. Students are not permitted to leave SAP at any point throughout the day.
Physical Education classes are preparing students to take part in this action-packed day, with an emphasis on giving each event your best effort. Students are required to choose a minimum of THREE events, one being a running event. Students sign up during Physical Education classes.
The events students will have the opportunity to compete in are:
Track: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1200m, 4x100 relay (by class)
Field: long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, discus, javelin
On the morning of May 18, all students will meet their regular period 1 class for attendance. We will then proceed to SAP. Attendance will be taken again at the end of the day, prior to returning to the school.
Students may bring iPods and cell phones, but at their own risk. Students will not be able to compete while listening to any sort of music device. Tents/tarps etc., are not permitted at the track.
We recommend that students dress appropriately for the weather. It is always better to bring more clothing than not have enough. Over prepare! Students can bring a blanket or sleeping bag to stay warm if necessary. If it is hot, sunscreen and a hat are strongly recommended to help prevent heatstroke. Have a water bottle, juice, or Gatorade to stay hydrated. A concession will be provided at the meet, but please do not rely on the concession as your only source of food for the day. Bring a healthy bag lunch with you.
In case of inclement weather, we will have a regular day at school. Radio stations will carry a public service announcement, and a School Messenger will be sent out by 6:00 a.m. if the meet is cancelled.
Students showing a high level of skill will qualify for the school track team. The school team will compete during the day on Tuesday, May 26, against other EIPS schools at Strathcona Athletic Park (SAP). This is a district track and field meet. We will inform all parents of the students invited to compete at the division meet on May 26th . Once again, please note that not all students go on to compete at the district meet – only those who qualify.
Once again, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Grade 9 Farewell - June 3
On June 3rd from 5-7pm we would like to invite our Grade 9 students and families to our Farewell Ceremony. To accommodate all families in the space, we ask that you limit guests to 2 per student.
Please RSVP to general.frh@eips.ca
We will be sharing a link to a Live-Stream for extended family and friends who would like to view the event.
After the ceremony we will be having a small Mix and Mingle in the courtyard for some snacks and pictures. Doors will open at 4:30pm
Help us celebrate the last 3 years with our amazing Grade 9 students!
Red Dress Project
Students were asked to complete an art installation project called the Red Dress Project. We had a discussion within the class before completing the project.
It was started by Jaime Black - "It is an installation art project based on an aesthetic response to this critical national issue. The project has been installed in public spaces throughout Canada and the United States as a visual reminder of the staggering number of women who are no longer with us. Through the installation I hope to draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Aboriginal women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence.”
The students took this seriously and did a lovely job of displaying these in the courtyard of the school.

Career Pathways is designed to develop skills that students can apply in their daily lives when preparing for entry into the workplace or for further learning opportunities. Competencies achieved will allow students to make relevant connections with work and/or post-secondary training. Our Mission: To provide authentic, relevant, and engaging career opportunities and foster growth and readiness for life after school.
Each month Career Pathways distributes relevant planning material, presentation sessions, occupational spotlights, and other helpful information meant to support students and families. It is our hope students in Junior High begin to understand opportunities available to them and explore and reflect on a variety of experiences to help them plan their next steps. High School students continue to set goals and further develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes that increase their readiness to successfully transition beyond high school.
Cyber Friday - Parental Controls
Teaching your children to use technology in a healthy way and pick up the skills and habits that will make them successful digital citizens is challenging. In today's digitally-fueled times, that means guiding them in the real world and the always-on virtual one.
More than ever before, managing online privacy, screen time, and the mental health concerns that often accompany these activities is challenging. Open and honest communication is vital and must be a cornerstone in any effective strategy. Another possible method is to use one of the many available Parental Controls to manage what kids see and monitor their activity in some instances. Here are a few examples:
- Google Family Link (Android Phones)
- Apple Families (iPhone)
- Shaw Bluecurve Home
- Telus Wise

Virtual Family Gatherings
Many thanks to the families who joined us for our virtual gatherings this winter. It was a pleasure to reconnect with those who were part of the gatherings last year and to welcome new families to our virtual circle. We’re grateful for the conversation, the ideas shared and the feedback on work that’s happening throughout the Division. We look forward to seeing you all again next school year—hopefully in person at some point!
If there’s anything stemming from the gatherings you wish to discuss, please reach out to the lead teacher at your child’s school or someone from the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team directly:
Planning for the 2022- 23 School Year
March and April are busy times for school lead teachers and the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team as planning begins for the next school year. Lead teachers and the team reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year, and the hopes for 2022-23. If you have ideas or feedback for your child’s school or the Division in general, please reach out to the lead teacher or connect with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team.
Treaty 6 and Métis Nation Flag Raising | June 13
If you’ve driven by EIPS Central Services recently, you may have noticed the addition of two new flag poles. As a further commitment on the path of truth-telling toward reconciliation, and as an affirmation as Treaty partners, EIPS will be raising the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation flag on June 13. Each school in the Division will also display the two flags and are busy planning staff professional development and student learning experiences to understand the significance of each flag. More information on the Central Services ceremony and the specific events at each school will be shared in the near future.
Opening of Central Services Land-based Learning Space | June 21
EIPS has been working closely with Elder Wilson Bearhead to design and build a land-based learning space at EIPS Central Services. With spring on its way, construction will resume on the space. As part of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21, EIPS will officially open the space, honour our ongoing relationship with Elder Wilson and affirm our commitment to deepen our relationship with the land that sustains us. We’ll share details of the opening event as the date draws closer.
First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learning corner- May 13
As our country moves toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, we thought we’d bring you a simple, easy way to move your own understanding forward if you’re curious about how you can be a part of the learning which leads to reconciliation. #Next150 was first introduced a couple of years ago, and we felt it was a good time to re-introduce it to the FR Haythorne community. Each link will take you to a short activity you can do to move your learning forward. Most of us know that in Indegenous culture storytelling is one of the most important ways of sharing information & history. So naturally, songs do the same. Take some time to listen to some of the Indegenous artists as they use this medium to tell a story. Was there something that resonated with you? Have a listen to learn more.
Planning to use Student Transportation in the 2022-23 school year? If so, make sure your child is registered so Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) can plan routes and send your child a bus pass before the first day of school.
All students who indicated needing transportation services through the returning student registration process are now registered. Families registered will received tentative route schedules and invoices by the end of the month—fees are due June 30, 2022.
For those students who didn’t indicate needing transportation service through the pre-enrolment process and want to now register, simply contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151 or email st@eips.ca.
For more information about EIPS Student Transportation visit www.eips.ca/transportation.
NOTE: Families can pay fees online using the PowerSchool Parent Portal. To pay in-person contact Student Transportation to make an appointment.
