Volume 2, Issue 29 - March 8, 2019
The conversation about cellphones and social media is constantly present when we discuss students and some of their challenges. Gentry PTSA in collaboration with our Partner in Education Missouri Employee Mutual (MEM) want to continue this conversation with more context and more information, and in order to do that they are bringing to families, staff, and students the award winning documentary Screenagers. You can find more information about the film HERE and see the trailer below.
All students will have the opportunity to watch a shorter version of the film next week. On March 20th, we invite you to attend a free screening (donations accepted!) at 6:00 pm in the Gentry Cafeteria. Bring your family and friends! This is a unique opportunity to watch this documentary as it is not available in any only platforms. And the concession stand will be open!
Synopsis
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
Mary Poppins, Jr. Performance
Mary Poppins, Jr. will pop onto the Gentry Middle School stage March 14-16, 2019! “Step in Time” to make plans to attend this Disney production! If you stop along the way to “Feed the Birds” or “Go Fly a Kite,” that is just fine. Make sure you join the Banks family, Bert, Mary Poppins and many others as they experience the magic of a “Jolly Holiday” and “A Spoonful of Sugar” on Cherry Tree Lane in London. If you want to be part of the audience for this “Practically Perfect” show, tickets are sold at the door for only $5.00 each. Each evening the show will begin at 7:00 pm and lasts about an hour. As always, it is family friendly! This production promises to be “Supercalifrag…,” well, you know what we mean! Hope to see you there!
Things to consider when choosing a College
Career Services
Having an active and supportive career services office is essential. College can open your eyes to careers you never knew existed, and the career services center can be instrumental in preparing you for your professional life after graduation. Career services include interview preparation, counseling, resume reviews, job placement support, and much more.
Job Placement Rates
Knowing the cold, hard facts about how many graduates in a particular field find a job, and how quickly, will help you evaluate a potential college. Many colleges publish data about the percentage of students receiving a job offer within six months of graduation. Some colleges will offer more assistance to graduates seeking employment than others. Finding out the job placement rate will help you make sure that your tuition dollars will be well spent and can influence your decision regarding the institution you choose to attend, as well as your area of study.

Incoming 8th Grade Students Proof of Immunizations- Don't Delay!
The primary dose of the Tdap and Meningitis vaccines are generally administered to adolescents in the 6th grade (or between the ages of 11-12). It is a state REQUIREMENT that we obtain proof that your student has received the primary dose of both of these vaccinations PRIOR to their first day of 8th grade. If your student will be attending summer school as an incoming 8th grade student they will need to provide this proof PRIOR to starting summer school. Eighth grade students who have NOT provided us with this documentation will not be permitted to attend classes until this documentation is provided.
There is no need to wait! This documentation can be submitted to our nurse any time after your student receives these two vaccines. Providing this proof promptly will ensure that your student will be ready to start the 8th grade without delay.
Prompt Parent Pick Up for After School Clubs, Rehearsals and Athletic Practices
After school clubs end promptly at 4:00 pm and our track and field practices end at 4:30 pm. Gentry teacher sponsors and coaches are required to supervise students until ALL of their students have either boarded the activity bus or been picked up by a parent. We need your help in being PROMPT at pick up time. In some cases, our faculty members have waited up to an hour after their club or team has dismissed, waiting for a handful of parents to pick up their students. Our teachers and coaches, like everyone, have very busy schedules and also need to get home to their families. PLEASE be courteous and arrive promptly to pick up your student! Thanks so much for your help with this.
StuCo’s Student/Staff of the Week
The purpose of the GMS Student Council (StuCo) is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership skills by organizing and carrying out school activities and service projects. One of the projects that this club currently oversees is their Student/Staff of the week project.
This week's StuCo students of the week are Prathy Prekumar for “being loyal, never leaving anyone out and always helping a friend when they are feeling down” and Korlynn Hall for “standing up for her friends and being there for others when they need her.”
This week's StuCo staff members of the week are Mrs. Crane for “being supportive of her students, encouraging them to do their work and building great relationships with her students” and Mr. Aulgur for “making everything in class interesting, being kind and still being enthusiastic after staying up late at night making breakfast (biscuits and gravy) for the GMS faculty.”
