The Counterculture Movement
The 1950s was a time of great prosperity for America. The Depression was over. WWII bolstered patriotism. Immediately following the war there was a baby boom and the average American believed they could achieve the American Dream: Owning a home, having a family, buying a car. POSTWAR AFFLUENCE redefined the American Dream.
While many Americans achieved these goals, as we saw yesterday, some groups found themselves left out and disenfranchised. The 1960s brought these groups into the spotlight as we saw in the Civil Rights Movement. Another important movement was the CounterCulture movement or Hippie Movement. This group took a sharp departure from more traditional, conservative ideals. They protested the war efforts in Vietman, experimented with psychoactive drugs and listened to a new form of music- folk rock. Although a relatively small group, their behavior was so radically different that they garnered a lot of media attention. In the activities today, you will look closer at this group and others and how they changed American attitudes and shaped a generation.
