Virtual Learning Resources
Whether you are experienced with the virtual learning environment, new to virtual learning or new to a blended classroom, the following resource can provide support and ideas for your virtual teaching and learning journey:
English Language Arts
Kindergarten - In Kindergarten, students are realizing that literacy is embedded throughout daily life. Daily, systematic instruction of phonemic awareness and phonics instruction along with providing opportunities for students to apply their new knowledge in both reading and writing is essential (LAFS.K.RF.3.3). Students are introduced to new authors and illustrators and a whole new world of literacy opens for them. Vocabulary building is a focus throughout the year. We learn how to read and say words, but we also develop an understanding of what the words mean within a text. Picture cues, anchor charts, and visual organizers are great strategies to support vocabulary development (LAFS.K.RL.2.4, LAFS.K.RI.2.4).
1st Grade - In First Grade, students continue to develop a foundation for literacy. Vocabulary is an essential foundational support (LAFS.1.RL.2.4). Through application of phonics skills, students are saying words correctly which increases word accuracy, comprehension and writing skills (LAFS.1. RF.3.3). Building on kindergarten, the students will identify characters, settings and major events in stories using key details using the text and the illustrations (LAFS.1.RL.1.3). Students will be introduced to a wider range of texts and be able to compare the differences between stories and informational text (LAFS.1.RL.2.5).
2nd Grade - In Second Grade, phonics instruction gives the students the tools to build independence in reading and writing. The students become active problem solvers when decoding unknown words. Applying phonics skills correctly supports students in decoding the word correctly, which increases comprehension (LAFS.2. RF.3.3). The “W” questions are woven throughout all literary and informational instruction. The students learn to ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions (LAFS.2.RL.1.2, LAFS.2.RI.1.1). When working with literature, students are exposed to vocabulary that supplies rhythm and meaning in stories, poems and songs (LAFS.2.RL.2.4).
Technology Tip - A Parent/Teacher Virtual Toolkit has been created as a Canvas module to support Reading Horizons instruction virtually. This toolkit contains letter and picture cards along with posters; Key Words, 5 Phonetic Skills, 2 Decoding Skills. These resources support students becoming more independent when applying phonics skills. The module is part of the existing grade-level resource courses where the exemplar are located.

Kindergarten - In kindergarten, students will be using what they have learned about addition and subtraction to represent different kinds of “put together” and “take apart” problems within 5 using drawings, objects, and equations. This supports building fluency in adding and subtracting within 5.
1st Grade - In first grade, students will develop an understanding of how related facts can be used to show the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction for a group of numbers. They will use the relationship between addition and subtraction to solve problems, find unknown addends, develop fluency with subtraction within 10. Students will also explore a variety of ways to show and solve problems using concrete models, drawings and equations to solve a variety of problem types.
2nd Grade - In second grade, students will explore using place value concepts as they work with three- and four-digit numbers, including counting within 1,000 by ones, fives, tens, and hundreds, using mental math to add 10 or 100 to given numbers up to 900, and comparing two-digit numbers using >, <, or = symbols. They will work with coins to identify the coin values, compute the value of any combination of coins within one dollar, and show coin amounts in different ways. Students will also tell and write time to the nearest 5 minutes.
Technology Tip - CPALMS Original Student Tutorials is a collection of interactive online lessons that students can use to support their understanding of MAFS Standards. Tutorials aligned to grade level standards can be found by navigating to www.FloridaStudents.org and selecting mathematics.
Science

Kindergarten - In kindergarten, students will be able to observe and create a visual representation of an object including its major features and observe that things that make sound vibrate (the force is the vibration.)
1st Grade - In first grade, students will be able to sort objects by observable properties and demonstrate that the way to change the motion of an object is by applying a push or a pull.
Social Studies
1st Grade -In first grade, students will dive into economics! They will be able to define opportunity costs and recognize the importance of saving money for future purchases. For Veterans Day, students will identify the national holiday as a way of remembering and honoring the heroism and achievements of people.
2nd Grade - In second grade, students will study geography. They will be able to use maps and globes to locate continents, oceans, Equator, Prime Meridian, North and South Poles, countries in North America, state capitals, Florida, and Naples. Upcoming Events - Required Instruction: Veterans Day ~ Wednesday, November 11, 2020
In 1919, when first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918. The purpose of Armistice Day was to honor the fallen soldiers of The Great War for their sacrifice and bravery. Seven years later, Congress adopted a resolution requesting President Coolidge issue annual proclamations on November 11, making Armistice Day a legal holiday.
On June 1, 1954 Congress amended the bill replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans to celebrate all veterans rather than just the ones who died in World War I. We continue to celebrate the day as Veterans Day, still recognizing the original tie with November 11. That means Veterans Day is on the same day every year -- November 11 -- regardless of which day of the week it falls. CCPS Teacher Resource
