Swansboro Elementary

March 3, 2023

Our hats go off to Mrs. Lynch this week for a wonderful Read Across America Week and book fair! She also helps coach Battle of the Books and Odyssey of the Mind which both competed (and won;) within the last couple weeks. We just wanted to give Mrs. Lynch a shout out and let her know how much we appreciate her!

Our traffic directing volunteer would like to ask you to use your blinkers so he will know which way you are going and can get out of your way. If you don't have blinkers he says he understands hand signals:) Also as a reminder, there is NO SMOKING allowed anywhere on campus, this includes the car pool lines. Beginning Monday we will be strictly enforcing the 3:00-3:20 daily NO CHECK OUT time, so that we can safely dismiss our students. Please make sure that you are utilize School Dismissal Manager (SDM) if your child is a car rider. If you are having troubles utilizing SDM, please swing by the school any day between the hours of 9am-1pm and we can help you. We folks don't follow the procedures, it slows everyone else down. With about 700 students it is imperative that we follow procedures so that we can be as efficient as possible. Please remember that we are continuing our Attendance Heroes initiative and students that are checked out early or arrive late are not counted as having perfect attendance. With only a few more months before end of grade testing, it is critical that students are at school, ready to learn each day.

Thank you for everyone's support of our Raise Craze Kindness fundraiser. We were able to raise $27, 404 and registered 2, 310 acts of kindness. While we didn't quite reach out financial goal, we came very close and we far exceeded our acts of kindness goal (which is more important anyways), so we will be having a GLOW DANCE PARTY during Enrichment classes on March 13th. Thank you to everyone for contributing to our Kindness Fundraiser and especially thank you our fabulous PTO for for all the time and hard work they have put into making this a success! PTO is looking for volunteers for the Nearly New Fish sale March 29th -April 2nd. The more volunteers we have the more money will go back to our school. This week is Social Worker Week. Please let Mrs. Kristin David know how much we appreciate her. You can email her at kristin.david@onslow.k12.nc.us. On Wednesday we will have our Strategic Planning Meeting at 4pm in the media center. Friday is a teacher workday, so there is no school for students this Friday.

Please be sure to check out our newsletter and click on the link (above) to see our February Students of the Month. These students were selected for demonstrating excellent cooperation skills and we are very proud of them! Keep up the great work Pirates!

Tips for success:

At SBES, we do not assign much homework, however, all students should be completing at least 45 minutes per week on iReady (math) and at least 45 minutes per week on Amplify (reading). These programs are adaptive and are based on your child's individual needs according to their diagnostic assessments. Reading nightly and practicing math facts will also help our students reach their fullest potential. We appreciate parents support of our efforts.

Here are our very first attendance heroes! These students were Here Every day Ready On time.

Lucas Capps from Mrs. Reed's class has 3 months of perfect attendance this year.

Veronica Rich from Mrs. Killingsworth's class has 4 months of perfect attendance this year. Paisley Campbell from Mrs. Regis' class has 2 months of perfect attendance this year.

Note from our Pirate Nurse:

February is Heart Health Month. We are learning how to take care of our heart. The theme this year is "Reclaim your Rhythm". Your-Happy-Heart-Health-Families-Handout-Print_22.pdf (healthpoweredkids.org)

AT HOME ACTIVITY - Health Powered Kids

YOUR HAPPY HEART Today we learned that our heart is a muscle that cannot be exercised by ‘flexing’ it like we can our muscles in our arm. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood through our body

Here is how to start: Move More: 30 minutes a day of physical activity

Eat a rainbow: Increase fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low fat dairy

Reduce Stress and Improve Sleep

Quit Smoking/Vaping:1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669)

Know Your Numbers: Ask your health care provider about your cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose numbers

School Cash Online & Field Trips:

Looking to pay school fees, pay for a field trip, sign a permission form or buy spirit wear? This is all done online through schoolcashonline.com. A few field trip reminders: 1. Everyone must have a signed permission slip to attend a trip (even those with fee waivers). 2. If forms are not returned by the due date, your child will not be able to attend. We have to secure food, transportation and purchase tickets ahead of time; therefore, we are unable to accommodate last minute additions. 3. Chaperones are not allowed on all trips, but for those in which chaperones are needed, the chaperones MUST be fingerprinted and approved through OCS. This is a lengthy process which is why we encouraged everyone to attend the volunteer training sessions at the beginning of the school year.

This is the method that we will use to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency, so you need to make sure that you are receiving these calls.

7. If there are custody issues, we must have a copy of the current custody paperwork on file with a judge's signature. If not, both parents have equal access to the student and their educational records.
