Tundra
Reid Kirk
Location
The tundra is located at the top of the world, near the North Pole. This enormous biome, extremely uniform in appearance, covers a fifth of the earth's surface.
General Characteristics
The tundra biome is restricted to the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere in a belt around the Arctic Ocean. Many of its species, both plant and animal, have circumpolar distribution areas.
Temperature
Temperatures during the arctic winter can dip to -60 F (-51 C)! The average temperature of the warmest month is between 50 F (10 C) and 32 F (0 C). Sometimes as few as 55 days per year have a mean temperature higher than 32 F (0 C).
Weather and Climate
It is cold through all months of the year Summer is a brief period of milder climates when the sun shines almost 24 hours a day. It has been called "the land of the midnight sun". But even the sun can't warm the tundra much. The short summer lasts only 6 to 10 weeks. It never gets any warmer than 45 or 50° F.
Precipitation
There is very little rainfall in the tundra; it rains less than ten inches a year and that's not a lot nether.
Landform
The tundra has a lot of Mountains. The tundra also has some Bodies of water around the area.
Biotic Factors
The tundra has lots of animals like the Arctic Fox, Caribou, Ermine, Grizzly Bear, Harlequin duck, Musk Ox, Polar Bear, and Snowy Owl. The tundra also has a lot of plant life like Arctic Moss, Arctic Willow, Bearberry, Caribou Moss, Willow, Labrador Tea, Pasque Flower, and Tufted Saxifrage.
Ecological concerns or issues
Deforestation. This is when the trees are cut down for metals and oil. farmers might chop the trees down for bigger farm land.
