Message from Principal Dorken
Lyon Families,
With plans underway to expand our students’ day and transition to an “adapted in person” schedule in April, it’s a great time to revisit our guidelines for success at Lyon. We teach everyone in the Lyon learning community that to Be Safe, Be Kind and Give Your Best Effort will lead to good things, for everyone. Underlying these guidelines is the expectation and assumption that we all care for each other.
A classroom community and a school-wide community are so much more than a collection of individuals on a path toward personal growth and success. Our staff members work together, continuously, to collaborate in ways that improve the school environment and the learning experience for everyone. Children, with the guidance and support of our staff, develop relationships and partnerships that are critical to their development and to their well being. And as parents and caregivers, you cooperate with us in so many ways, small and large, to strengthen our school community and to foster the growth and success of all of our students - your own children, as well as your neighbors’.
This school year has certainly had its share of twists and turns. There have been many challenges faced and addressed, and there, of course, have been some unfortunate outcomes due to the pandemic. The extent to which we can point to successes thus far is largely based on this notion that we all care for each other. It occurred to me that our wearing masks this year is very emblematic of this idea. We wear our masks to keep ourselves healthy, and we wear them to keep those around us healthy. We especially wear our masks to help those who are most vulnerable among us to stay healthy. We’ve said multiple times throughout the pandemic that we are all in this together. As a school community, we are actually always “in this” together.
Because we all care for each other, when we move to our “adapted in person” schedule beginning on April 7, we will be taking ample time to reconnect, to reestablish our commitments to each other, and to strengthen relationships all around. This social-emotional learning (SEL) focus will be shared across Glenview District 34, and will help everyone have a strong, new start and a positive finish to this school year. We look forward to it!
Message from Principal Friedman
Pleasant Ridge Families,
Happy Spring! I hope you’ve all been enjoying the increased sunshine and warmer temperatures. It’s been nice to get the family out of the house a bit more often and enjoy some outdoor activities. I see 60 degrees in our 10 day forecast, so get out and enjoy!
The big news around Glenview is our plan to move to Adapted in Person in April. Many details are still being worked out and I know we’ll be communicating quite a bit with you in the coming month. I’m excited to increase our time with students and take one step closer to ‘normal’. The move to Adapted in Person will come with many modifications to our typical school routines, but this move means we are moving in the right direction. Our staff are eager (and probably slightly anxious) to have students for the full day and be able to work with students on the entire curriculum and across all content areas.
From a student’s perspective, we will certainly have our work cut out to build up our stamina for a full in person schedule. Our staff is very cognisant of this and making sure that we phase our planning to support the physical and mental transition to a full day. Students have shared their spectrum of emotions from excited to anxious, but most are happy to finish the year with a full school day and in person experiences for all their subject areas.
Once again, I’d like to thank all our parents for your extraordinary partnership over the last year. It was last March when everything changed for all of us. We’ve been approaching this moment little by little and now we’re ready to cross another hurdle in our move towards normalcy. That in itself is extremely gratifying and good news for all of us.
Stay healthy and be well!
Erik
Important Notes
Incoming 3rd Grade Parent Orientation- Mrs. Chin and I are working on updating our presentation for incoming families. Our goal is to share a video with families by the end of April. Additionally, our 3rd grade team will be working with the Lyon 2nd grade teachers to facilitate Pen Pals. This is an opportunity for our current 3rd graders to connect with Lyon students and tell them a little bit about Pleasant Ridge. Mrs. Chin and I are also planning on visiting 2nd Grade classrooms this spring to introduce ourselves, share a bit about Pleasant Ridge, and answer any questions students may have at that time. More information to come on our transition plans.
Shift to Adapted in Person- In the coming month you will be receiving lots of information on our move to Adapted in Person. The communication will come at both the District and School levels. We look forward to working with you to ensure a smooth transition for our students.
- Kids Heart Challenge Update- Looks like Mrs. Chin and I will be getting slimed! We are currently closing in on our school wide goal, and I’m so proud of our students for supporting this important cause and making a difference. Thank you to our entire community for making this yearly tradition happen in such a unique year. The Kids Heart Challenge is a badge of honor for the Pleasant Ridge community, be proud!

There are no exceptions to this policy. Students should not have medication in their backpack or pocket; parents must provide the medication indicated on the form, in original packaging, to the school nurse.
