Frequently Asked Questions About the COVID-19 Vaccination in Children
Why is it recommended for children ages 5 years and older to be vaccinated?
There are approximately 28 million children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old in the United States, and there have been nearly 2 million cases of COVID-19 within this age group during the pandemic. Children who get COVID-19 can get very sick, require hospitalization, and even die. Also, younger school-aged children who get infected can spread COVID-19 to people in their households and school settings. With many children back in school and participating in extracurricular activities, COVID-19 vaccination is critical to preventing infection and serious illness, as well as slowing the spread of COVID-19.
When is my child considered “fully vaccinated”?
2 weeks after their 2nd dose in a 2-dose series. Please provide a copy of the COVID-19 immunization record to the health office once complete.
If my child is fully vaccinated, do they need to quarantine if exposed in school?
No need to quarantine, only observe symptoms for 14 days once fully vaccinated. Test on or after the 5th day as a precaution.
Does my child need to participate in weekly testing if I choose to vaccinate them?
No, COVID-19 testing is not required when a student is fully vaccinated. However, students who come to school with COVID like symptoms regardless of vaccination status, will still require a negative test result or doctor's note when returning to school to rule out COVID-19.
What do I do if I find out someone at home tested positive for COVID-19?
Please contact the health office immediately. The sooner we find out, the sooner we can respond and keep those considered close contacts home and safe from further COVID-19 exposure. Also, if a family member tests positive, it is best practice to keep everyone in the household in quarantine for at least 10-days.
