Imagine you were playing football, you bump into several people. Your head starts to hurt. You tell the coach, the coach says "keep playing you will be fine". Then all of a sudden you fall over and get sent to the emergency room.... Would you risk all of this for a game? The elimination of football as a sport will cause less physical and mental problems.
Both children and adults should never have the opportunity to play football, because football causes serious brain injuries. "According to the New York Times, the September report from "PBS Frontline" 76 out of 79 deceased NFL players studied by the Department of Veterans Affairs' brain repository in Bedford, Mass. suffered from a brain decease"(New York Times). In other words, the majority of people who played football in the NFL experienced serious brain damage during their life times. This study should be proof to all people who play football should be eliminated from athletic choices that all people make. Other studies have also shown that football is extremely dangerous."Football related activities sent an average of 25,400 kids under the age of 19 to the emergency room every year for brain injuries." (Why I will never let my son play football). This proves that football can result in emergency room visits for brain injuries. Why are people willing to risk their brain for a game?
It's no secret that people who play football have a high chance of getting a concussion. In fact, there is a high chance of getting one. According to the "New York Times", "football players have a 75% chance with the likelihood of for a second doubling after they've sustained the first". People are getting very hurt from a sport. "In the film concussion, smith portrays a doctor trying to convince Americas most popular sports league to deal with its head trauma problem. It is an issue that almost everyone concedes is both real and serious"(Marcus). Keeping people healthy includes the elimination of football.
The odds of a football player getting C.T.E are very likely. According to the "New York Times", "contact sports is the greatest risk factor for C.T.E". C.T.E stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. According to the article, "Don't let kids play football", "depending on the severity of the condition, the child now has the risk of manifesting symptoms of C.T.E like major depression, memory loss, suicidal thoughts or actions, loss of intelligence as well as dementia later in life". In other words, people suffer from illnesses which were never thought of as being related to injuries in the brain. For example, dementia causes elderly people to forget things. Only recently have doctors discovered that there is a relationship between injuries and memory loss. Another example of a problem that is related to a C.T.E is depression. People always thought that depression came about because of sad things that went on in a person's life. Can you believe that all of these things can happen from playing a game? Chronic traumatic encephalopathy can also cause drug and alcohol abuse. According to the "New York Times", "C.T.E has also been linked to drug and alcohol abuse as the child enters their 20's, 30's, or 40's". Every year millions of dollars are spent on helping people to get rid of their drug and alcohol problems. If people would stop playing football, this money could be used to help people in other ways. Why would people even think about playing football?
However, there are several reasons to oppose this point of view. Researchers say that football teaches teamwork, leadership, responsibility and perseverance. This belief assumes that people benefit from football. For example, according to "Alic", "The game is about fun, friendship, and camaraderie". However, it causes major damage to your body. Although most people think football is fun, why would you take a chance your life to have a little fun?
Many people would benefit from the elimination of football. There would be fewer amounts of injuries. The elimination of football as a sport will cause less physical and mental problems. Football is a very scary sport, especially when you are watching your kid play the game and get hurt. Some kids love the game, but they get injured so much that it causes life threatening issues later in life. Football does some damage to your brain. If you hear what it did then you would be frightened and never let your kid play football.
