GOOGLE VOICE -TECH TIP #2
March 25, 2020 | DeISD LIbraries
What is Google Voice?
Google Voice
Currently, all DeISD teachers are working from home with the expectation to communicate with parents or students in 24 hours or less. Communicating with families quickly can be a challenge without sharing a personal phone number. The flexibility of Google Voice will allow you to text messages or call parents and teachers on-the-go using a protected Google number. It gives us an easier way to contact students and parents when you DO NOT want to give out their private number.
Here's how it works:
- Create a Google Voice Phone Number.
- Link your Google Voice Phone Number to your Cell Phone.
- Verify your phone number.
- Share out your new Google Voice Number.
4 Easy Steps!
Step 1 - Create a Google Voice Phone Number
Once you’re logged in to your Google account, head to www.voice.google.com. On this screen, Google will prompt you to enter an area code. If your location services are enabled on your device, Google will automatically pull up a few suggested area codes for you to choose from.
*Note: Google allows you to choose any area code, as long as there are numbers available.
Step 2 - Set up a forwarding phone.
On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your existing phone number. This is the number that will be linked to your Google Voice Account and receive inbound calls to your Google Voice number, so be sure to select one that you use often (if you have multiple).
Step 3 - Verify your phone number.
Afterwards, you will also have a chance to set up your voice mail and name greeting.
4. Check your settings.
How Will It Work?
When you answer the call, a recording is played that says, "You are receiving a call from __________." You can choose to answer the call or send it straight to voicemail. The caller has no idea whether you picked up the phone or not and parents will never see your private cell number!
