Cape Cod Tech's School Update
October 5th Update
Good evening everyone,
We have had all in-person students into the building over the last two weeks, and it has gone so very well. We are very happy with students and their ability to be extremely mature in following and being conscious of the protocols in school. Great work!
We do feel the shop experience has been extremely successful. We will be extending this Phase with shop-only in person for two more weeks until November 2nd. (We also will be implementing a Professional Development Day for teachers on 10/23, so that will be a no-school day for students.) There are a few reasons why we are doing this. I will list below what we are doing and follow it with another section of why we are doing it. Some folks just like to know what they need to do and are not as concerned as to the why. We have shared the schedule and provided an updated "Cheat Sheet" for when kids go to school below. For those who want more information, I have provided the reasons for making this change at such a late date. I hope folks understand our decision making is in the best interest of the students.
Again:
- Phase A will continue to October 30th with Oct 20-23 being a Maroon Week and Oct. 26-30 being a Gray week.
I am asking students, parents, and guardians to be "nimble" this year. We need to be able to change direction for safety and learning purposes. As we throw the challenges of opening a new building into the mix, it creates the necessity for even more flexibility.
Below are a few key reminders for students. Each grade level should review the information and be prepared.
What do I do if I need to quarantine?
If you need to quarantine due to travel, proximity to a person ill, or possibly even a positive test result, please continue to access your learning remotely. This is not an option. If you do not access your classes (academic or technical) remotely you will receive 0 for the expected work and be marked absent.
If you are isolating due to illness, a counselor will speak to your parent or guardian and make a plan.

October 26-30:
Gray Week:
9th Graders: In School (at CCT) Shop
10th Graders: Remote (at home) Academic Classes
11th Graders: In School (at CCT) Shop
12th Graders:Remote (at home) Academic Classes
At-home learners will follow the shop or academic schedule according to their grade level.
Why the schedule change?
- Things are going great in the shop. Students are getting their hands dirty in their learning and doing a good. job. More opportunities to learn in person would be better for the students.
- Technology is just getting online. As you know we built a brand new school building this year and some things are still getting worked out. Some of our classrooms do not have certain technology capabilities that allow our teachers to bring your students the best education possible. These technology issues have kept teachers from gaining access to instructional Smartboards as well as training on these devices. We expect everything to be up and running by the 19th, but again we do not want it to falter and not be able to provide students a good learning environment. Technology issues is one of the biggest reasons we have decided to continue learning in person in the Technical Environment.
- Sadly, academic classrooms may not be ready. As mentioned earlier, we built a brand new school building this year. As you pull up you can see how beautiful it is. However, there have been some unfinished areas. Due to COVID, there have been delays in furniture and fixtures. Some rooms still need cabinets installed and furniture delivered. Other rooms are waiting for tables to be completed. We expect everything to be done by the 19th, but we would like some wiggle room just in case...
- Training on technology for teachers would not be available until everything is all set. Henceforth, our Professional Development Day has been scheduled for Friday, October 23rd. Teachers need technology training to teach in person. We purposely held off on utilizing all of our available Professional Development Days at the beginning of the year to access them when resources in the building became available. Technical teachers also need this training to provide the best learning environment for their students as well.
- Getting ninth-graders into their next phase of exploratory while completely in person will allow for a smoother transition. For our 10-12th grade students, they know how important exploratory is, and to have students try to do it remotely is a bit difficult. Having the first week completely in person will allow for students to understand what typically occurs and what is expected.
Social Emotional Health Screenings For 10th and 12th Grade Begins 10/5/2020
Social-Emotional Health Screenings For 10th and 12th Grade Begins 10/5/2020
In order to address the social and emotional well-being of students amid the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Cape Cod Tech plans to screen 10th and 12th grade students beginning the week of October 5, 2020. We will be utilizing the UCLA Covid-19 Screen for Child/Adolescent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The information gathered in this screening will be used solely for the purposes of connecting students with necessary resources such as counseling and other outside agencies providing support.
It is important for parents to know that this screening does not formally diagnose PTSD. The results will only be used to connect students with resources, which are all voluntary. Results will only be viewed by the School Counseling Department. Interviews will be conducted confidentially on an individual basis. A copy of the screening that will be used is included in this email.
If you do not want your student to participate in this screening, please click here to complete the opt-out form.
If you have any questions or concerns about the screening, please contact Erica Tasha, School Social Worker etasha@capetech.us 508-432-4500 ext. 2408 or Averill Davis, Lead School Counselor adavis@capetech.us 508-432-4500 ext. 2403.
Thank you for helping us support your student’s social-emotional health!

Pirates of Penzance!
Would you like to spend 10 weeks working on your acting, singing, and dancing? Are you looking for an escape into a hilarious world of swashbuckling piracy, not-so-dainty damsels, and adventure? Join us in exploring this wild romp of a musical over Zoom! Over the course of 10 weeks, we will work on developing your acting, singing, and dance technique as we collaborate to create a filmed theatre experience. You will be an actor, director, cinematographer, and pirate extraordinaire! Creating this piece over Zoom means that we can really dig into each person’s individual talents and creativity. The intimacy of performing theatre on Zoom is an indispensable tool for developing a performer’s rapport with the audience as well as their specificity as an actor. Although primarily taking place online, this class intends to safely include four in-person days of rehearsal, recording, and cast bonding (dates TBD). This class culminates in a once-in-a-lifetime production being live-streamed over Zoom for all family and friends far and wide to enjoy!

Busing Schedule and Information
Bus Information
Students who do not follow ridership guidelines including wearing a mask and keeping socially distant may be removed from the bus and busing privileges may be revoked. CCT will be placing monitors on buses to ensure the safety of all students.
If in the poll in early August you the parent/guardian selected that you needed bus transportation and now do not need bus transportation, PLEASE contact the school at 508-432-4500 or dmcloughlin@capetech.us. Our buses are filled to capacity and knowing that someone no longer necessitates transportation will provide tremendous relief to our system.
