A Little Slip of Heaven
Christopher Shannon, a Rochester native and current Associate Professor of History specializing in American Catholic history at Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia, offers a presentation entitled, "A Little Slip of Heaven: Songs and Stories of the American Irish, from Baby Boom to Baby Bust." It tells the story of the Irish American Catholics in the decades following the Second World War. Through original songs based on traditional Irish melodies, Chris looks at how, in a time of tremendous change, Irish-Americans tried to remain true to their ethnic and religious culture rooted in urban, working-class neighborhoods. Though he deals with the topic in as broad as possible terms, many of the songs are based on Chris's experiences growing up in the Tenth Ward and Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. Mother Teresa: No Greater Love
October 3 & 4
25 years have passed since the death of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta , sparking a renewed interest in this spiritual giant of the 20th century. Filmed on 5 continents and featuring unprecedented access to both institutional archives and the apostolates of the Missionaries of Charity, this film reveals not just who Mother Teresa was, but how her singular vision to serve Christ in the poor continues to be realized through the Missionaries of Charity today. This is far more than a documentary. It is at once a soaring tribute to one of our great, modern, Eucharistic Saints. This is a great gathering idea for young adult ministries. Click the button for show times and locations. The Office of Evangelization & Catechesis plans to attend the October 4 showing at Eastview Mall (Victor), if anyone would like to meet up!
