From the Principal

Dear Thornhill Families,

Once again, welcome back. We had an amazing first week of school. Everything is running smoothly and we are staffed, as usual, with an awesome dedicated staff. I am sure you knew that already! Thank you all who came to the coffee "gathering" on the first day of school. It was great to see and talk to you. I am looking forward to seeing you all for Back to School night, tomorrow, Wednesday August 22, from 6-7pm! Please note this important event is for adults only.

Here's to a great year!

Mr. Daubenspeck

Tree Removal at St. John’s Church

From our neighbor St. John’s Church, which kindly lets Thornhill families use their parking lot for drop off and pick up: Some tree removal is scheduled to begin Thursday and Friday, September 13 and 14. The equipment will be staged in the church parking lot and the work will occur during the normal business hours between 8am and 4pm. We will do our best to keep the noise to a minimum and regret any inconvenience this may cause any of you and the school. Some of the parking lot will be blocked off to accommodate the equipment which, we hope, will have a minimal effect on the school traffic as the parents drop off their children. Any comments or questions, please direct them to Jerry Moran, 510-531-0980 (home) 510-502-9695 (cell).

Calling All Gardeners!

Hello everyone, my name is Alexis Lavine-Moore, and I am the mother of a kindergartener and 2nd grader at Thornhill. I have had the joy of teaching gardening with my daughter's classes and caring for the garden areas at Thornhill for the past two years, and am excited to start gardening with their Kindergarten and 2nd grade classes this school year. I would love for all of the kids at Thornhill to have the opportunity to learn from the natural cycles of the plant world and have the gift of growing and eating their own food. It is a wonderful experience for the kids and they are always excited to get in the garden, work with the soil, pull weeds, water the plants, and eat the fruits (and veggies) of their labor.

I am looking for parent volunteers who would like to help with teaching the kids in the garden and/or helping maintain the garden areas (weeding, watering, etc). Please contact me at or (510) 367-7676 if you are interested in helping.

Traffic Volunteers Needed

Are you looking for a way to volunteer this year at Thornhill? If you have 30 minutes to spare between 8:20-8:45am, the traffic crew is looking for help with morning drop-off. The job entails setting out the cones in the drop zone, helping kids out of cars, and helping direct traffic. We are covered with one volunteer every day (two on Fridays) but it's way easier with two and three is best of all! No experience needed, if you can help one day a week (or more!) please contact us at

Many returning families will know that Martin Spizman has been the anchor of the drop-off line for several years, showing up every day, rain or shine. Because of a new job, he won't be able to help anymore, so we'd like to acknowledge the tremendous contribution he's made over the years keeping our community safe. Please thank Martin when you see him on campus!

Many thanks,

Christa Pennacchio and Stephen Cole, Traffic Safety co-chairs

Dine Out for Thornhill

Come to our first Dine Out Night at The Star on Grand (3425 Grand Ave, Oakland, CA 94610) on Wednesday, September 12. Dine in or take out between 5pm-9pm and 10% comes back to our school! This is a great opportunity to enjoy a family night out and hang out with other Thornhill families. Here’s the dish…

What: Last year, we successfully raised over $859 for Thornhill through our “Dine Out” nights—we earned $347 of that total in one night at The Star, so let's do it again. Have a great meal, hang with fellow parents, and help support Thornhill at the same time.

Who: Date night, family dinner, etc. Coordinate with a few familiar faces or make new friends over cocktails, small plates, and delicious pizza.

How: When you arrive (to dine in or take out), please tell your server you are there for Thornhill. At the end of the night, the purchases will get logged and a 10 percent giveback will go to Thornhill PFC.

Eat. Drink. And Raise Money.
