Mary May Jones Elementary
September 2021
Welcome Back
Dear MMJ Family,
Wow, these first three week flew by and it has been so good to see our students back at school. This year our academic expectations are set high and our staff is ready to help each one of our students succeed. The best part of my day is walking into classes and seeing your child's smiling face and engaging in learning.
This year we are focused on 6 dispositions.
- Problem Solver
- Empathy
- Team Player
- Perseverance
- Confidence
- Self-Awareness
Don't forget picture day is this Friday.
Important Reminders:
- Please remember students are expected to be in their classrooms by 7:30 everyday. If your child wants to eat breakfast; they need to be here by 7:20. This allows your child time to eat breakfast and still be in their classroom by 7:30 to start the school day.
- During Car rider lines, please stay in your car. Our staff will help your child in and out of the car.
Have a safe September and please let me know if you need anything.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Stafford
Principal
First Day of School!
We Missed You!
It is going to be a great year!
From Our Nurses Station
I am so proud of all of our students at Mary Mae for how well they are doing with wearing
their masks and social distancing. I know this has to be hard for them and they
are champs. Just keep reminding them daily to keep their hard work up.
Reminders from the Nurse
Make sure your student has a clean mask on daily.
Remind them to make sure nose and mouth are covered by mask.
Always keep hands clean by handwashing or using hand sanitizer.
Remember to monitor for any COVID-19 symptoms on a daily basis.
Please keep your student home if you think they may be sick.
If there are any questions regarding symptoms,
Please call the school nurse.

Fun Math Game to Play at Home
The Subtraction Game
The Subtraction Game: perfect for the car or while you're waiting in line
The subtraction game is a great way to practice counting and develop number sense. It is played with just a few simple rules and does not need dice, cards or a playing board. You can play with or without objects (any objects will do....toothpicks, pennies, sugar packets at a restaurant)
How to Play
Start with a pile of 13 of toothpicks (or any other collection of similar objects). Two players take turns removing 1, 2 or 3 toothpicks from the pile. The winner of the game is the person who takes the last toothpick. There is a strategy for winning that you and your child can discover. Once you’ve discovered the strategy for this game, you can alter it. You can start with a different number of objects or allow a different number of objects to be removed each turn. You could also alter the rules so that the player who takes the last object loses instead of wins.
Playing without objects and keeping track mentally of how many "objects" are left is a great way to build your child's mental math skills.
