Hello FUSD Staff and Community,
As we seemingly fly toward the last day of instruction, I am hopeful we also make time to slow down to mark and enjoy a season of appreciation. I look forward to seeing many of our staff, students, and community at the upcoming graduations and end of year celebrations.
At this week’s Board of Education meeting, Denise Klawitter was named FUSD’s 2022 Classified Employee of the Year! She is a Special Education Paraeducator at Grimmer Elementary. Her outstanding fellow nominees were Selvin Diaz - Custodian at Hopkins Junior High, and Betty Ng - Accounting Technician in Budget, Audit and Attendance. Congratulations to each of the nominees, and thank you for your professional dedication and excellence.
Next week the District will celebrate Classified Employees Week to thank all our classified CSEA, SEIU and FSMA employees for their vital contributions to our students’ and schools’ success.
FUSD honored current and former employees retiring between spring of 2021 and the end of this school year at this week’s Board meeting. I wish our retirees well in the next chapter of their lives, and our district thanks each for their contributions to our students’ success and well-being.
Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and I loved seeing the celebrations across the District. The District will continue to work toward reaching an agreement on a successor contract with our FUDTA negotiations partners, knowing that our highly-qualified and dedicated staff are vital to the success of our district. The District also looks forward to engaging our classified staff and managers in collaborative discussions on successor agreements as well.
Of course, we are also celebrating our students as they mark another year of growth and achievement. At this week’s Board meeting, SURFBoardE (Students United for Representation to the FUSD Board of Education) presented State of the SURF 2022, a review of their remarkable accomplishments this school year.

Thank you all for your continued support for our students, staff and schools.
Measure E Bond Updates
Please join FUSD on May 16 from 6-7pm for a virtual update to our community on Bond-funded construction projects. Get updates on completed projects, projects currently underway, and future plans.
Each attendance area has work scheduled through the coming years; the biggest projects underway are those to transition Centerville, Thornton and Hopkins junior highs, which currently serve grades 7-8, to middle schools serving grades 6-8.
Our community made these and other projects possible through its generous support of Measure E in 2014 to build and improve FUSD facilities. The investment reflects our community’s commitment to our students, staff and schools.

At-Home COVID-19 Test Kits
FUSD is participating in a state program to provide free at-home test kits to each preK-12 student (ages 2+) and staff member for use through the end of the school year to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Participation in this program is optional.
The kits will be distributed directly through school sites and employees’ work locations.
FUSD will not require proof of a negative test for students or staff. However, students or staff with a positive test result, any COVID-19 symptoms, and/or a known exposure to someone with COVID-19 must follow our student flowchart or staff flowchart before returning to campus.
NEW FOR 2022-23: FUSD is Offering Spanish & Mandarin TK Immersion Classes!
Spanish Immersion TK will be offered at Blacow Elementary School and Mandarin Immersion TK will be at Lila Bringhurst Elementary School.
Immersion education is an alternative educational model designed to provide students with fluency and literacy in two languages. In these programs, all students develop literacy in the target language first with the gradual addition of English.
