The Manning Weekly Newsletter
September 6, 2019
Mrs. Sawyer and Mrs. Whitacre's friendly football rivalry.....
Dear Families,
It has been a fast, furious and busy four-day week here at Manning, and we are settling in nicely to the routines of school and learning.
I wanted to write this week to ask you to help me have a conversation with your kids about the dangers of vaping. According to the child mind institute: "Although e-cigarettes have been around for more than a decade, vaping rates have skyrocketed in recent years, especially among teens.
JUUL, a popular vape device that comes in fun flavors, looks like a flash drive and can be charged in a USB port, is especially concerning. JUUL delivers high levels of nicotine, making the product extremely addictive. JUUL sales now make up more than half of the e-cigarette market, and “we see clear signs that youth use of electronic cigarettes has reached an epidemic proportion.”
In light of the scale of this problem, we will partner with our district nurse to deliver a message about the dangers of vaping during HEART time to all grade levels, but I would also encourage you to have a conversation with your kids around the following information about why vaping is so dangerous, especially for adolescents:
E-cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine. According to the company's website the nicotine content of one JUULpod is equivalent to one pack of cigarettes.
Because of these high nicotine levels, vaping is extremely addictive — and teens are already more susceptible to addiction than adults because their brains are still developing.
A recent study found that vaping does, in fact, cause lung irritation akin to that seen in smokers and people with lung disease and causes damage to vital immune system cells.
Vaping increases heart rate and blood pressure, so can increase circulatory problems.
The Center for Disease Control is currently investigating at least 450 cases of vaping-related illnesses and 5 vaping-related deaths.
I hate to start the newsletter in this negative, scary way, but student safety is my most important job and I believe that information is a powerful tool to help our kids stay safe and healthy. Below is a picture of some popular e-cigarette products, so that we can all be aware of what they look like.
Thanks, as always, for sharing your kids with us. It is our honor to serve them.

Parking and exiting a vehicle is prohibited along the yellow curb in front of the building and in the “bus loop” to the North of the building.
Please feel free to use both the Bus Loop and the Main Parking Lot in the mornings and afternoons to help alleviate congestion.
Parking along Alkire or along 32nd is prohibited.
Please keep traffic flowing by pulling up all the way to the end of your loop before letting your student out of your vehicle, and by filling in gaps between vehicles in cue. Sometimes, when a car stops in front of the main doors, it backs traffic up into the street.
We ask that both students and families utilize the crosswalks at the stoplight to cross either 32nd or Alkire.
We encourage families to stagger their pick ups at the end of the day as they naturally stagger drop off at the beginning of the day. You are welcome to pick up your students any time between the final bell and 15 minutes after school releases. There will be supervision in front of the building until then.
We ask that students and families stay off their phones and stay aware as they walk or drive through the parking lot.

At Manning, we strive to live our core values every day.
HONESTY
Cate Towle is always there for her friends and what she says is never a lie!
Deputy Lewis does her work with integrity and lives her values every day!
EFFORT
Mrs. Norton helped me with my locker every time!
Gunnar Tande always comes in with a smile. He has a great sense of personality and loves to make my day. Thanks Gunnar!
I have seen her always working hard. She can't even really see where she is at and yet she still gets amazing grades. I think she does her best and still puts a smile on my face. Thanks Sophia Leo!
Logan Rogers always makes a effort to make everyone happy and make everyone laugh.
Sienna Mascarenaz demonstrates effort in many ways, but one reason certainly stands out to me. I was doing my homework in access and I came across a problem I didn't know how to solve. So, I asked her to help me. She directed me with such ease and clarity, I understood the problem just as much as she did. Because of this effort to understand new found material and being able to teach it to her fellow peers, she deserves to be nominated for effort.
Cameron O. puts in a lot of Effort to help people around her. Not only that but she puts effort into her own grades at the same time.
Keiton always tries in school and is always making new friends. He makes people feel welcome and gives them someone to talk to. Without him school might be a lot different.
When I was leaving science I doped all my books and Dakota helped me with cleaning up my things. Then she asked if she could carry anything. This shows effort because she could have been early to class but she decided to help me out.
Jakub has put a lot of effort to get into Manning and has finally made it!
ACHIEVEMENT
Kohei showed me the right way to do a problem in math.
Jakub Palla joined our 7th Period ELA class today and jumped right into our class discussion about the poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes! He volunteered to read the poem and did so splendidly in front of the rest of the class. He also was ready and willing to answer many questions about the theme and happily shared his ideas with the class. We're happy to have you here, Jakub!
Every morning Jacob Christianson comes in with a smile on his face and if anyone needs help with homework he will always work with that student to get a good math grade. He is positive, friendly and welcoming to anyone who sits with him. He is a true Manning Mustang!
RESPECT
Margot stood up for me when somebody said something rude to me.
Evan Whitney saw that his friend didn't have a seat at lunch to sit with him and his friends, so he gave up his seat so his friend could sit there and Evan sat somewhere else so his friend would be happy.
Drew Crane is always respectful, and she always works well in teams. She is also a good friend.
Elliot Jenkins is always waiting for me because he is the bottom locker and I'm on the top. He always waits for me to finish even if it means he'll be late to class.
Mrs. Mcleod always has enthusiasm and is very nice.
TEAMWORK
I was having trouble with my locker and Murphy Shanley stayed behind missing recess to help me.
Every day Camille Miller and Audrey Sara will help me through my schedule. They feel like a team to help me and they are so helpful in my 6th grade year so far.
One day I was walking with Mikah Nelson and I dropped some books he picked them up and said, ¨We are going to the same class anyways.¨ I just appreciate that.
Addy Joy is an amazing friend, she is always a team player and makes my friend group fun. Without her it would be different.
Isabella Delisa and I worked together on our social studies homework. She helped me with some questions too.
Kayla Silvia was really sweet to me on the first day of school and I am still really good friends with her.
Brylynn Kieran was cheering on the teams in ultimate frisbee and even though he did not make it to the championship he was happy for the kids that did.
Ms. McLeod always helps others and makes class fair and fun for everyone. I feel more welcome with my peers because of all the group projects she had us do. I look forward to ELA every day!
Everyday if I'm late for recess, Anna McCormick will come help me put away my things. She is there for me every day!
Gwen Schneringer helped out a classmate who needed to leave the class for a few minutes by taking notes for her while she was gone. This meant that she wrote everything down twice so that her friend wouldn't miss anything from our Theme lesson while she was out. Thanks for being awesome, Gwen!
