The Founder: Dave Olerud

Dave Olerud is the founder of the American Bald Eagle Foundation. He created this organization in 1985 because of his intensely independent mindset. As a result of his mentality, he was also the mayor of Haines, Alaska, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Independent Business Association for Alaska. Sadly, in 1987, his back was crushed by a wall while the ABEF museum was being built. However, this did not jeopardize his dream and to this day he works 30-40 hours a week in the ABEF museum.

The Future:

ABEF has many objectives. One of these future goals is to build a Research-Resource Center close to the laboratorical habitat of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines, Alaska. The construction for this project started in the spring of 2010. It is planned to be a 48 x 80 foot Raptor Center attached to the ABEF museum. In 2011, the raptor center housed up to three bald eagles which were avaliable to the public. The center also keeps care of injured birds.

How to Get Involved!

The American Bald Eagle Foundation always needs help. Since they are a non-profit organization they constantly need financial help, especially when it comes to preserving the Bald Eagle's beautiful habitat. Also volunteers are always accepted. There are spots open all the time at the museum and the research center.
