Hello and Goodbye
Please help the board extend a warm welcome to the following newly hired staff; Du Bui, education technology consultant, and Jamie Shepherd, math consultant. We are happy to have you on the JCISD team.

Thank you Board Members!
In honor of the state of Michigan having designated January as school board of education month, our ISD board members received gift cards to use for the purchase of JCISD apparel, and succulent planting created by Agriscience--floral--students at the Career Center. Thank you board members for your leadership, support, and continued dedication.
This, That, and the Other
Early Childhood-GSRP
The Great Start Readiness Program is the state funded preschool portion of the Great Start/Early Childhood team formula. It services "at-risk" 4-year olds as the primary focus. In the face of across the state funding cuts this past year, the JCISD Great Start/Early Childhood team rallied to identify community partners who were willing to help fill the gap. Most notably, grants from Consumers Energy Foundation in the amount of $38,000, and the Jackson Community Foundation which awarded $20,000. These partnerships and grant dollars will make it possible to continue to offer assistance to students in the transition from early childhood to elementary school. This past year, JCISD early childhood team were able to help over 700 students making this transition.
21st Century Talent Creation Subcommittee
In December, Career Center principal, Dr. Pogliano, was appointed by Governor Snyder as one of four members of the 21st Century Talent Creation Subcommittee to represent Michigan K-12 schools. His appointment, coupled with Superintendent Oxley's chairmanship of the region's Career and Educational Advisory Council, and Learning Services director, Tovah Sheldon's work with Region 2 MI-STEM, ensures Jackson County's ongoing involvement with Michigan's talent development initiatives.
Jackson Saves Program
A new partnership has formed between CP Federal Credit Union, Jackson Community Foundation, Jackson County ISD, and local school districts, with the aim of getting Jackson County's kids off to the right start in saving for their future education. The Jackson Saves program will establish savings accounts for incoming kindergarten students with an initial deposit of $50. The goal is to help students, early on, develop the savings habit and begin saving for college or post-high school career training. Of course, parents have the option to enroll or opt-out. Initial deposits will be from a mix of private and public funds raised by CPFCU and JCF. The ISD's role will be mainly the facilitation of communication.
Jackson County Early College Update
- 297 students began the Fall semester and 293 finished; 336 students are currently enrolled to begin the Winter 2019 semester.
- Normal course success rate for incoming regular freshmen at Jackson College is 70%; JCEC students had an overall 75.23% course success rate.
- Every public district had participating students.
- A challenge for the future is appropriate placement in College Algebra.
Ayes & Nays
Based upon the recommendation from NEOLA-the district's policy service-and work done by the administration, several board policy changes were recommended at the December meeting. After having some weeks to review and further consider the policy updates, and a brief discussion for clarification on a few points., the board voted unanimously to adopt the policies with the noted changes.
