Family Fun Day is Coming in February!
Hello Alton Darby families, it’s that time of year again!!
The annual Family Fun Day is coming, February 20, 2016. Each year during Family Fun Day a silent auction is held in the school library.
We are in need of wonderful donations for this auction from our ADE families.
We are seeking out anyone who has a local business or can provide a service, and would like to provide a donation. Appropriate items to donate might include gift cards, merchandise, coupons, family oriented activities or products or various types of services.
The Alton Darby PTO is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to financially support and promote programs that improve the educational opportunities for our students and community involvement in our school. As one of our biggest fund raisers, this auction assists the PTO in supporting programs such as Publishing Shop, Family Community Events, Staff Appreciation, Professional Development, Author Visits, Professionals in Schools, Field Day and classroom improvements. The PTO will advertise your business during the auction and in the school newsletter. We will also follow up with a formal letter confirming your donation for your records.
If you or someone you know would be interested in donating, please contact the Silent Auction Chair, Kelly Miller at 614 565-1398 or knk1999@hotmail.com, or the ADE PTO.
Thank you in advance for your support, assistance and contribution.
The Power of Culture at Hilliard City Schools
This week in the Get Connected Blog, Superintendent John Marschhausen spends time talking about culture in the Hilliard School District. He talks about the importance of being able to stand up and own our work and how we are better as a team. You can read the series here in the Get Connected Blog.
Kindergarten Registration Starts January 11!
The Hilliard City School District will begin Kindergarten Registration on Monday, January 11, 2016 for the 2016-17 school year. If your child will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2016, he/she is eligible to start kindergarten during the 2016-17 school year.
Parents should complete the online registration and sign up for a registration appointment by using the online tool SignUp Genius. Please don’t delay. Appointment times fill up quickly and this will give you a better opportunity to reserve a screening time that works well for you.
Parents will be given the option to upload their documentation with the online registration form. Parents with students already enrolled in Hilliard City Schools will have the option to schedule a phone conference.
New parents to our district will need to make an appointment to come to our Welcome Center at 2140 Atlas Street, Columbus.

Keeping Your Student Digitally Safe at Home
We invite parents and students to attend a workshop designed to help keep your student safe at home while online. The program is on January 14 at 6:30pm at Hilliard Station 6th Grade School. This class will feature breakout sessions with parents and students grouped separately. You can read more about the class on our One2One webpage.
Parent Workshop: Student Anxiety
This workshop will feature a panel of parents who will talk about their families struggles with teen anxiety and how they handled the issue with their children. Co-hosted by Syntero Counseling, it is open to all parents in our district. Come ready to ask questions and hear coping strategies that are working for other teens and families.
The event will be on January 28 at 6:30pm at Darby High School.
Information Regarding Spring 2015 PARCC Results
As many of you are aware, the State of Ohio required the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessment to be given in the Spring of 2015 to satisfy the requirements necessary to examine student achievement on the newly adopted Common Core State Standards in both language arts and mathematics.
The PARCC assessment was met with an abundance of public discontent due to the amount of time required to administer the tests and the number of sittings required by students to complete each round of testing.
As a result, Governor John Kasich signed legislation with his 2015 Budget Bill to dissolve the partnership with PARCC and State Superintendent Richard Ross immediately announced that the state would partner with AIR (American Institute for Research) for all future mandated state assessments.
The state already had a relationship with AIR because they were the assessment development partner for the 4th grade social studies and 5th grade science state tests administered last spring. PARCC was only responsible for the development of the language arts and mathematics assessments.
The test score results 4th and 5th grade students received this week should be reviewed with caution in mind. We have no historical comparison data for the PARCC assessment. These results provide academic information in regards to how your child performed on a single test at a single point in time. Also, it is important to keep in mind that the PARCC assessments will no longer be administered, so the PARCC assessment results from last school year will provide no longitudinal data for the student.
All students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take the AIR assessment this spring to meet the state mandated testing requirements. The AIR social studies and science tests given last spring in 4th and 5th grade were concise and not overwhelming in nature. We anticipate a smooth and timely window for testing this spring. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Herb Higginbotham
Principal
