======================================
** Dear Sonoma Valley Unified Kindergarten. First, Second, and Third Grade Teachers:
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! While we finalize our English Language Arts / English Language Development adoption, we have purchased supplemental instructional materials to help support reading foundations in your classrooms this year. We shared this information late last spring through your principals, but we wanted to send along an update to clarify what’s been selected. We will be providing you time to review these materials during the trainings on August 14th.
Wilson Fundations: https://www.wilsonlanguage.com/programs/fundations/
The Wilson Fundations is a 30 minute daily, whole class program designed to prevent early reading failure. Kindergarten through third grade teachers at Dunbar, Sassarini, and Prestwood will receive materials and training for this program to implement this school year. Our training will be offered by district staff who participated in training this summer, and teachers will have access to the Wilson Reading Prevention Learning Community for support in the use of the program. District staff are exploring options for providing ongoing on-site coaching in the program so that staff gain familiarity and comfort with the program components over time.
Estrellita: https://estrellita.com/
This program will support early Spanish literacy skill development at Flowery. The district has used this program for several years and Kindergarten and First Grade staff will be provided a refresher training in these materials. This training will be hosted online at Flowery School.
Units of Study Phonics: http://www.unitsofstudy.com/phonics/
Teachers College has recently developed phonics materials for its Units of Study program. El Verano piloted the program in Kindergarten and First Grade last year. They will expand their pilot to Second Grade this year and also train Third Grade teachers in this program so that third graders can benefit from additional support in any areas of need. This training will be offered at El Verano by consultant and former teacher Kevin Coates. Kevin also provides ongoing coaching in this program for the El Verano staff.
Wilson Reading: https://www.wilsonlanguage.com/programs/wilson-reading-system/
Elementary Special Education teachers will be trained extensively in the use of the Wilson Reading program in late August. We are thrilled to have a district-wide, coherent curriculum to support literacy development for our students with IEPS.
We hope this helps to clarify the purpose and content of the K-3 trainings planned for August 14th , and also provides a context for how we are supporting literacy development as we pursue our ELA-ELD adoption. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you have.
