Please know how much we value a strong home-school connection and that we welcome any and all parents to reach out to your child's teacher, the office, or to Mrs. Hutchison at any time! I look forward to seeing you all then!
We also welcome parents to add to our "Wall of Dreams" bulletin board by the front doors. Consider the question: "What hopes and dreams do you have for your student(s) this year?" I hope that by writing our hopes down we make the intangible more concrete!
Here's to an amazing year ahead and an exciting first day with our kindergarten kiddos!
Working Hard on Being B.R.A.V.E. at Avoca West
This year we'll be focusing on how "Vikings are BRAVE"
B - Bold (take risks and push through when things are tough)
R - Respectful (look to do the right thing for themselves, others, and our school)
A - Accountable (own successes and the mistakes and look for ways to grow from them)
V - Valuable (You make Avoca West a better place by being here!)
E - Empathetic (look out for others and seek to understand others' feelings)
Our year started off Day 1 in the ITC listening to Mrs. Hutchison setting the stage for the hard work in the year ahead. Academics will be challenging, but so will really looking inward and making sure that we are creating the Avoca West were we all want to grow and learn each day. The Viking clad principal also read How to Be A Viking to the students -- viking accent and all!
Day 2 focused on spending some time within our common areas at Avoca West really diving into the expectations in each area. This idea of teaching the expectations explicitly is based in Randy Sprick's Safe and Civil Schools model and is one that resonates with our staff and students. You can find a visual of the expectations that link to our "R" - being Responsible - in the various areas. We will hope to reinforce those expectations with our BRAVE tickets and will reteach as often as needed -- because we're all learning (even the principal who sometimes can be chatty and high-fivey in the hallway)!
Each Friday we will pull a random ticket from each grade level's bucket to recognize the BRAVE Viking VIP whose picture will be added to our amazing Avoca West ship. We can't wait for your to see our crew on Wednesday and hope you'll help to encourage these BRAVE characteristics at home and at school!
Check out our first week's BRAVE Viking VIPs below!
