At the end of every year, different book reviewing publications choose some of the best books published during that year. Lots of people have opinions, but usually some of the same books are on every list. These are some of those books!

West of the Moon by Margi Preus

El Deafo by Cece Bell

- graphic novel/memoir (PB BEL)

- The main characters in this book are bunnies, but it's really the author's story, describing how she experienced school with a hearing aid.

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

- memoir/novel in verse (921 WOO)

- Tells the story of Jackie, growing up between the south and the north, in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. It's the story of her childhood.

The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights by Steve Sheinkin

Revolution by Deborah Wiles

- historical fiction (F WIL)

- 2nd book of the "Sixties Triology" but you don't need to read them in order

- Takes place during the "Freedom Summer" in Mississippi in 1964. Tells the story of 12 year old Sunny, who's white, and Raymond, a "colored boy," and how their lives are so different. Their paths keep crossing until something happens that threatens the whole town.

- Included in the book are real song lyrics, photos, newspaper articles, and speeches from that time period.

- what people said: long but not hard to read, complex, easy to get involved in the story
