I am profoundly appreciative to each of you for working extremely hard this school year to meet each of our students where they are and to help them grow into fine young people academically, socially and emotionally.

There are a flurry of emotions on this last day of school. As you reflect on the positive and not so positive at times, hug the students one more time before they leave your classroom, smile and know that each of you have made a huge positive impact in our students' lives this school year.

Now it is time to CELEBRATE good times! If you have a high school senior graduating tonight, enjoy every minute of this momentous occasion. We have two high school and college graduates now in our family so I know it is a bittersweet moment in time.

This summer, celebrate with family and friends as often as you can. Safe travels, see you at the river, around town and we will see you all in August!

Letter to MHHS Seniors Class of 2023

The Mountain Heritage High School Class of 2023 is full of energy, creative ideas, and intelligent young adults. I have enjoyed watching each of you learn and grow in so many ways during this school year. Parents and family members, I know you are extremely proud of your children. Please know that I am honored to watch them receive their diplomas next weekend after so many years of hard work.

As you begin your new journey I have a few words of advice:

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's book written by L. Frank Baum in 1900. The classic piece of children's literature is full of many life lessons. The characters face numerous trials along their journey, however they stay strong and overcome all of the obstacles put in their way. The characters each have an undiscovered talent. By working together as a group, they realize their talents and reach their individual goals. Can you relate to any of these characters?

The scarecrow wishes he had a brain. You have one so keep using it! Think critically about topics and issues. Seek wisdom and guidance from others. Your parents and grandparents often know best so listen, ask questions and use your common sense. Please continue to use your brain as a lifelong learner. Many things in life can be taken away but your education cannot be taken from you.

The Tin Man wishes he had a heart. You have a strong one so follow it! Be kind and have sympathy, empathy and compassion for each other. Life is short so take every opportunity to be good to others and serve others in this lifetime.

The Lion wishes he had courage. You have the courage to step outside of your 13 year comfort zone. So keep being brave and try new experiences.

The Wicked Witch of the West wanted Dorthy’s ruby slippers for their magical powers. When the naysayers and difficult situations come your way, you must stay strong and courageous to overcome these challenges.

Dorothy realized over time and through her trip to the Land of Oz that there is no place like home and you can come home again. Please come home and visit the people who love you. Yancey County is a fantastic place to be and we hope that you will come home to rest, relax and rejuvenate.

The Class of 2023 is full of graduates who have been given a heart, a brain and courage. You are awesome young people and I cannot wait to see how you use these characteristics to go forward and do great things in your lives!

Congratulations to you and your families!

Godspeed,

Kathy Amos
