Social Studies Update
Social Studies Consultant: Kelly Bellar kelly.bellar@region10.org
Late spring and early summer have seen some changes and additions to Social Studies:
· NEW Items for Social Studies include:
o “Thinking Like a Historian/Geographer” Units – In grades 4th through high school TRS has created a new process/skill unit titled “Thinking Like a Historian” that is intended to highlight the skills of what it means to “do” the work of a historian. There is a “Thinking Like a Historian” resource that has been added to explain the units.
o Performance Tasks in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade – Performance tasks are designed to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of learning and understanding though the production of an authentic product. There is one overarching task for each unit and each are aligned to the “Thinking Like a Historian” units where students “do” the work of a historian/geographer. These tasks are a great way to expand assessment and gather additional data on student progress. They can be found in the IFD below the Performance Assessments.
o Overarching Understandings/Questions have been revised for all units. There is a Social Studies “Big Ideas” resource that provides background information as well as the entire list of understandings and questions. These are embedded in all units K-12 and was crafted with the work of Jay McTighe.
o The Celebrate Freedom unit has been eliminated as a curricular unit and has been transferred to a resource guide. The reasoning behind this is to allow schools more freedom on where to place the emphasis on mandated observances found in the TEKS.
o Social Studies Literacy Spiral Items can be found in the assessment item bank for 8th U.S. History, World History and U.S. History.
o Other new resources that have been added include:
§ Using the Understandings-Based Curriculum
§ Using Political/Editorial Cartoons
§ Reading and Making a Map
§ Frequently Asked Questions in Social Studies
§ Document Analysis Sheet
