Grandparent Celebration
We hope your child's grandparent can attend Mountainview’s Grandparent’s Celebration. During this time, visitors will have a treat with your student in our cafeteria, take a selfie at photo stations, and have the opportunity to visit the school book fair.
The dates and times are as follows:
Tuesday, November 19th
Pre-K @ 9:30-10:00
Friday, November 22nd
K and 1st @ 9:30-10:20
2nd and 3rd @ 1:00-1:45
4th and 5th @ 2:00-2:45
If grandparents live out of town and are unable to attend, a “grand” adult can attend in their place. Also, if a grandparent or other adult will be taking your child home with them after the celebration, please complete the permission form that will be coming home soon and return to your child’s teacher by Wednesday, November 20th (Monday, November 18th if your child is in PK).
We will follow our visitor policy. Adults must check in and surrender licenses while in the building.
Arctic Academy
Arctic Academy is a Monongalia County Schools program that allows school to re-imagine classroom time disrupted by inclement weather or unforeseen calamities preventing a traditional day of instruction. Arctic Academy days will be announced by School Messenger to both staff and students with instruction pertaining to the day.
On these days, students will complete assignments designed by their educators that have been loaded on their student Chromebooks. These assignments do not require internet for completion. Arctic Academy counts as a day of instruction. Students who complete the assignments will be counted present for the day. Students have five (5) school days to turn the assignments in to their teacher.
Teachers will be available to answer any questions students may have or provide needed support as students complete the assignments. Emailing, using Google Classroom, or calling the office are options to have questions answered.
Weather
November ushers in cooler temperatures and inclement weather. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather each day. Students need to be prepared to go outside for 30 minutes of recess each day. Students go out to recess as long as it is not raining and temperatures are not “frigid”. Coats, hats, and gloves are essential for recess. Please be sure your child is prepared for the elements. You may also want to consider labeling the inside of his/her clothing as many student items look similar. Encourage your children to visit the “Lost & Found” bin located in the cafeteria; there are SEVERAL items that have been “found” this school year.

Grade Level news
Pre-K
- This month in Pre-K we will be learning about Community Workers. Students will learn about jobs in the community and their importance. We will also learn about foods, grocery stores, and then discuss Thanksgiving.
- Please continue to practice good hand washing skills at home, as we continue to wash often at school. With flu season approaching, please keep in mind the county's sick policy. Fever free for 24 hours without medication and vomiting and diarrhea free for 24 hours.
Kindergarten:
Remember to check your child’s folder each evening and return the folder to school the next day.
In Math we are working on comparing numbers from 1-10, and writing numbers from 1-20 Practice counting with your child everyday. If your child can count to 10, make their goal 20. If they can count to 20, make your goal 30, and so on. The end of Kindergarten goal is to independently count to 100.
In Reading we continue to learn new sight words and fluently identify letter names and sounds. We are also segmenting sounds in simple consonant-vowel-consonant words (ex. dog, had, ham) and blending the sounds together to read words. Segmenting=given a word (dog), child will say each sound they hear /d/ /o/ /g/. Blending=given sounds /d/ /o/ /g/ , child will blend together each sound to say whole word (dog).
First Grade:
- Please be sure to check the weather for each day. We go outside if the real feel is 28 degrees or higher (rain or snow permitting). If your child wears a jacket to school please label it with their name. Your child is responsible for bringing their jacket and any other belongings in from the playground; please remind them of this. Please do not allow your child to bring any toys to school unless their teacher has given them a show and tell day. Your child's teacher will send a note home if that is happening.
- In math we are working on fact fluency within 10. Have your child tell you about the friends of 10 and other numbers they've been working on!
- In reading, we are working on short vowel sounds and blending sounds. Please continue to read with your child for at least twenty minutes each night to further develop their reading abilities. Be sure to ask them about the story they are reading to check for comprehension. Setting, characters, and looking at the differences between fiction and non-fiction are all elements that we are exploring in our small group instruction.
- Your child should have also brought home a list of sight words. Please practice these using any of the suggested activities (or any fun and creative ones that you've found). A new list will come home each month.
- This year we have had many discussions on what we are feeling and how to express our emotions when we are feeling a certain way. Please ask your child to share what strategies they have learned for handling a frustrating situation. Remind them that taking a deep breath and walking away are great things to do when someone is upsetting them!
- Please continue to check your child's folder each night for any important information that will be coming home. Arctic academy assignments have been placed in the back of your child's folder. Please keep them there until needed. More information will be coming home as the weather gets colder.
- If you have not already sent in a pair of headphones for your child to use on the computers please do that soon. We have been working on logging in by ourselves. Please review your child's log in for their computer when you have a chance. The more they practice, the easier it will be for them to log in without needing help!
Thank you for all that you do!
Second Grade:
- For the month of November, in Math we will be learning about subtraction without regrouping and one-step word problems using two-digits. Math fluency to 20 is a year long struggle in second grade. Students will struggle with math concepts that are taught later if they are still struggling with the basic facts.
- In Reading, students will be working on drawing conclusions, text features and asking and answering questions in both fiction and nonfiction texts. In phonics, we will be adding s and es, ai ay, and long o. During our daily journal writing, we have started telling more in our writing series. We are sharing our writing with our classmates.
- Our morning meeting time is used for our second step curriculum to discuss emotions and feelings and how to appropriately act during those emotions. Empathy is our focus this month. We are trying to walk in others' shoes. We are also learning to talk and listen in a whole group setting. A highlight of our week is class meeting. During this time we celebrate our successes and brainstorm ideas on ways to solve problems we encounter throughout our day.
Third Grade:
- RLA: Third graders will continue to work on Opinion writing through the month of November, as well as work with fiction and non fiction texts to explore skills including: sequence of events, text and graphic features, and conclusions.
- Math: Continue to practice multiplication/division facts with your child. If your child uses Reflex at home to practice fact fluency, that is wonderful! Just remember to let them practice independently using this website. Students will move into numbers and operations in base ten. This unit will focus on using place value to round, add and subtract, and multiply.
Fourth Grade:
- Science: We have finished up physical and chemical erosions and we will begin stream tables for our next investigation in Science.
- Writing: Students will be finishing their personal narratives and we will be transitioning to fiction stories.
- Math: We are still focusing on our multiplication facts as we continue to progress through our iReady lessons. Remember to be practicing your facts at home.
- Reading: We will be transitioning out of the journeys book and we will be beginning our first novel study of the year with Walk Two Moons. Students will be focusing on point of view, summarizing, vocabulary, and comprehension through this study.
