Mission Statement

The mission of Helen Keller Elementary School is to establish and maintain an educational community that empowers all students to become principled, independent inquirers who are socially responsible global citizens.

Royal Oak's Elementary Teacher of the Year

This year's 2015-16 recipient of the Royal Oak's Elementary Teacher of the Year is Valerie Ault! Here are a few things that others have said about Ms. Ault.

One colleague wrote, "She is a caring, nurturing educator who takes the time to get to know each and everyone of her students; their strengths and weaknesses; their interests and the world around them. She establishes a great rapport with her 2nd graders that last throughout elementary and beyond. I have witnessed her past students light up upon seeing her and naturally giving her a big hug. She is the biggest advocate for any student in her class; whether they might need extra academic support, something to make their home like easier; or an extra academic challenge."

A parent wrote, "She started student council and invited Ben to join as the first third grader. It was a great experience for him and he stayed with it for fourth and fifth grade as well. One of his favorite projects was the valentines cards. Students could buy cards to send to friends. A few days before they were delivered, Ms. Ault had the student council make cards for any child that someone had not bought one for. Ben LOVED that day."

"In my and my childred's opinions, Valerie Ault is an outstanding teacher and we are all better having her be a part of our lives."

A student wrote, "I think Ms. Ault is a wonderful teacher. She is a great leader and role model. I am now in 5th grade but 2nd grade with Ms. Ault was my favorite year. She always made 2nd grade so much fun, even while teaching boring subjects. I felt like every unit was so much fun with her teaching. She was able to keep everybody in line without ever having to yell. She was always very excited to teach us and I was always excited to learn from her."

"Even after 2nd grade Ms. Ault still taught and helped me in many ways. From 3rd to 5th grade I have been on the student council. Ms. Ault was the leader. Our job was to come up with new and better ways to help the community. She helped come up with many ideas that helped places like the CF Foundation, The Community Housing Network, Beaumont Children's Hospital. We donated food and toys to the animal shelter. We held CF Walk in the field behind our school. These are some great things that we've done on student council. Ms. Ault is always willing to help others and I think that is why she is the leader of student council."

"From the moment my brother met Ms. Ault seven years ago until today, she has been an important person in our school and in my life and I definitely think she should be teacher of the year."

Ms. Ault will be moving on to Oakland County's Elementary Teacher of the Year. CONGRATULATIONS Ms. Ault and Good Luck!!!

Valentine's Party

We will celebrate on Friday, February 12th, 2016

This is the second of two parties that we are allotted per school year (the other one was Halloween). Parties should not last more than one hour. These should be low key celebrations (EX: snacks, craft, opening cards). Teachers will determine the time, sometimes it is shorter. Party activities should not include anything that will damage the carpet or furniture (dyes, making goo, etc). Teachers will coordinate with room parents and need to be aware of the plans. Please submit a list of volunteers to Karen Kaiser by Wednesday, February 10th. We will have a sign in and badges available for them right outside the office.

The Friends of Fungi Mycology Club will meet on March 16th , 2016 beginning at 7:00 pm at the Royal Oak Senior Center (3500 Marais). Have you ever seen an alien looking yellow blob in your garden and wondered what it was? It may have been a slime mold. Once thought to be fungi because of their fruiting bodies, it is now known that these amazing organisms can, when young, move around the garden or forest floor. Join us and learn more about slime molds.

"First Day of Spring” nature walk is being held at Tenhave Woods on Sunday, March 20th, 2016 beginning at 2:00 pm. Park Lexington & Marais & meet at the Lexington entrance.

Blood Drive

Keller's Annual Blood Drive is right around the corner on Friday, February 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Our goal this year is to reach the 40-pint mark—with the support of our amazing families, we just might do it. Did you know that each donation helps up to three people—that's amazing! The PTA Blood Drive committee is asking for volunteers to help with the drive: provide childcare while parents are donating, chat with donors before and after the donation process, and help the Red Cross personnel with anything they might need. Click here for the Sign Up Genius to volunteer. Spread the word to family and friends, and even consider becoming a blood donor yourself!

International Food and Fun Fair

The International Food & Fun Festival (IFFF) committee is already busy making plans for this year’s event! This much-loved Keller tradition, which will be on Friday, March 4, includes food, fun and entertainment from around the world. It is held on the same night as the Silent Auction fundraiser. Interested in learning more and helping to plan the event? Please contact co-chairs Barb Shipman or Becca Giuliano for more information. Specifically, leadership is needed for the Kids Raffle, Cafeteria, Crafts and Games so please consider lending your talents to this fun, marquee spring event at Keller!
