Pet Cloning
By Nick Spinoso and Doug Perman
What is it? How is it being used?
Pet Cloning is the process where a tissue sample is taken from a pet and the DNA is injected into an unfertilized egg resulting in one to four clones being produced. Pet cloning is being done by private corporations for citizens primarily and the process is done in South Korea by the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation.
What are benefits? Disadvantages?
The benefits of this genetic engineering is that people are able to revive their pets in a unique way being able to see their pet with the same traits and characteristics as the original pet. However the disadvantages are the massive cost of 25,000 to 100,000 dollars and the process being done in the distant country of South Korea.
How does it affect organisms physically?
The only thing that is required from the dog is the DNA sample that they need to acquire to begin the cloning process but aside from that there is nothing. It also does not affect the organism that the DNA sample is injected too besides for the unfertilized egg becoming fertilized.
What's its economic affect?
The economic affect of pet cloning is very negative it costs $100,000 USD to clone one dog if it is done by the organization Sooam. Other companies like ViaGen charge 50,000 for dogs and 25,000 for cats. That is an insanely high amount of money compared to just buying a normal dog for way less and the money could be better spent on dogs that need help.
How does it affect the environment?
Pet cloning could affect the environment in a very negative way. This could be very bad because rather than saving a species it could cause an entire species to go extinct from the same disease because they will all have the same weakness and the same Genetic makeup. It also gives pet owners who went through the process the illusion that their deceased pet is still alive.
How does it affect the world in a social aspect?
Pet cloning affects the world socially by taking away the individuality of pets and what makes each one unique. If there are so many clones of pets then you would end up seeing the same pet all the time and there would be very little variety. It has also caused controversy over cloning in general and some people view it as "playing God."
How will it affect our future?
Pet cloning will affect our future in many different ways. One possible way is that it will cause there could be very little variety in pets. Another way is it can cause many species to die out from the same disease which will cause us to lose many animals. Lastly people may lose interest in dogs from shelters leading an overabundance of them.
