Covid Cases: 10

Close Contact: 6

Unfortunately our Covid cases went up this week. 2 of the cases we found from our pooled testing. The students had no symptoms. As Covid 19 cases decrease in Arizona, we anticipate next week having less cases.

Our Tuesday Pooled Testing continues. We tested 162 students/staff this week. If you would like to sign your student up, you can use the following link: https://testcenter.concentricbyginkgo.com/invite-by-code

Access Code: APC54P

FYI: If you are fully vaccinated with no symptoms or have had Covid 19 in the past 90 days, you do not have to quarantine due to close contact.

Have a great week and of course call me If you have any questions/concerns, thanks Rose School Nurse 602.257.3900

Kindness and Empathy

Many students here at Shaw have spent the last few weeks learning about kindness and empathy. They have learned to read body language, facial expressions and to look at the situation to determine how someone is feeling. They can then determine how they might experience the same situation and act accordingly. They have learned to give compliments, offer help and take care of each other. They have learned that sometimes people might need space to calm down before they are ready to talk.

I think we all need to remember that these continue to be trying times with many stressors and differing viewpoints. Please work at showing kindness and empathy to those around us. Many people hide their feelings and you do not really know what they are experiencing. Show grace and courtesy and approach situations calmly and get clarification.

Let’s use Valentine’s Day as a springboard to show kindness to all- Make a plan with your child to show at least one unsolicited act of kindness this week.

Garden Update

Big picture

Greetings!

This week was a bit of a hodgepodge. I planned on beginning our SOIL II block but garden prep work took precedence. I decided to replace our SOIL II block with our WATER block (this was scheduled for March). The WATER lesson is very relevant, interesting and has tons of fun experiments included in it. We will start next week. I brought my sister’s dog, Bugs, to campus on Monday and Friday. He was a huge hit. Thanks to the students for giving him such a warm welcome!

This past week has been a lot of weeding and amending the beds. We learned that life and death is cyclical process and not a linear one. We sieved all the student compost and spread it along the beds. It looks nutritious and rich! The students were reminded that nothing goes to waste in the garden when you compost. Next week we will begin planting!

Our 7th and 8th grade garden cohort worked on their recipes for the Blue Watermelon Project’s event, Feeding the Future. This event will take place at The Farm @ South Mountain on February 26th. Tickets for the event are over $100.00 and there is limited supply. There will be tons of tasty eats and a whole slew of good company

Half of our tree plantings have been scheduled. APS will work with a group of volunteers and students to plant 10 trees on Monroe St. on March 3rd. The remaining 13 trees are still being scheduled. We can expect to plant them either before spring break or the following week.

We need a propane tank for the grill. If any parent has an extra that they would like to donate we will happily accept one.

We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. NO MORE SINGLE BREW PLASTIC CUPS PLEASE! We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.

We will take your eggshells as well! Please don’t rinse them. The worms love the yolk! Please, NO MORE EGG CARTONS. If I see another egg carton, I might go AWAL.

We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution.

Here’s my email: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org

Thank you to Amerie’s family for the Home Depot gift card!
