ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Friends and Families,
This afternoon CCS held its Fall Carnation Ceremony, with our eighth graders officially welcoming our Kindergartners to the CCS community. This is one of CCS’s best traditions as it celebrates many things that our K-8 school can offer - connection among “littles and bigs”, a sense of community and tradition as well as acknowledging important milestones that occur within the journey that students travel in their K-8 years. The ceremony itself is special, but the behind-the-scenes practices are the true gift as they are the beginning of the connections between younger and older students that will take place throughout the year.
This morning, we welcomed another author from our Vermont community! Doug Wilhelm spoke to 6th graders about his book "The Revealers", which they read at the beginning of the school year. He answered questions about the book's development and characters, and reminded students that he writes for them, and that everyone who reads a story brings something of their own lives to it. "I want your life to become part of my stories." This was described as a “totally awesome visit” - thanks again to the generosity of our PTO!
Please see below for a couple quick photos of a special day at CCS!
Warm Regards,
Stephanie, Jen and Cassandra

FLU ADVICE FOR PARENTS FROM THE VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine every year.
How does flu impact children?
Each year in the U.S., millions of children get sick and thousands are hospitalized with the flu. Last year, 180 children died from influenza, the highest number of flu-related deaths in children ever. About 80% of flu-associated deaths in children occur in kids who have not been fully vaccinated against flu.
What are the most common flu symptoms?
Someone with the flu might have fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, headache, runny or stuffy nose, chills, tiredness and sometimes diarrhea or vomiting. Not everyone with flu will have a fever.
What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
Colds and the flu are both caused by viruses, may occur around the same time of year, and have some of the same symptoms. The major difference is how quickly the symptoms come on. Cold symptoms tend to come on more slowly, often over a few days. The flu hits hard with multiple symptoms (fever, cough, aches) coming in the first 24-48 hours.
Why should your child get a flu shot?
The flu shot contains an inactive dose of the influenza virus, which tells the immune system to create antibodies to fight off the potentially deadly viral infection. While it does not guarantee that a person will not get the flu, it reduces the risk of getting the flu, minimizes symptoms and lessens the risk of the flu passing on to others.
Can the flu vaccine cause the flu?
The flu vaccine cannot cause flu. The virus used in the vaccine is inactive. Some people may experience soreness around the injection site or achiness for a day after getting the flu shot. This is a normal reaction as the body responds to the vaccine.
Where can my child receive the flu vaccine?
Your child’s health care provider can give your child the flu vaccine. The Health Department gives primary care providers pediatric flu vaccine at no cost for their patients age 6 months to 18 years. If your child doesn’t have a provider or insurance, contact your local District Health Office: www.healthvermont.gov/local

You have the power to protect your family against flu this season. Get yourself and your family a flu vaccine – fight flu!
