Still Getting Spoiled This Week! Thank you very much! You guys went bananas!
Math: Students will be taking the District Math Benchmark this week, as well as, completing an assessment on the financial TEKS covered during PBL.
Reading: We are deep in our unit of, “Read Like a Third Grader”. In this unit, we teach strategies strong readers use to comprehend and answer questions about a selection of text. These strategies include: numbering paragraphs, rereading the questions two times, and going back to the text to find evidence for an answer choice. These strategies will be used on the 2nd Grade Language Arts Benchmark the first week in May. If your student has a redo on their paper. Please have them look at it again over the weekend. This will hopefully slow them down the first time, so they do not have to redo the work over the weekend. The District Benchmark will look like these types of questions. All the answers are in the passage. The kids just have to take it seriously and go back and find the answers.
Writing: As we continue to review small moment stories, we will spend most of our time narrowing down our topic. For instance, a ‘zoomed in topic’ may look like this:
My family vacation---day at the beach---building a sandcastle. Once we have a ‘zoomed in topic’ we will add many details using our five senses and feeling words. We will also be looking at editing and revising a pre-made piece. Editing skills will be on our benchmark as well.
Social Studies: Students will examine the development of a product from a natural resource to a finished product. We will also look at the ways science and technology have changed the ways we meet basic needs (then and now).
I will also be starting end of the year Reading Assessments. This is always exciting to see how many reading levels they have jumped.
The second grade students and teachers are so proud of the generosity that was shown this week. Thank you for your donations and your willingness to "Fill the Buckets" of the children and families at the Texas Baptist Children's Home. We far surpassed our goal of matching last year’s $900. Thank you for your support! Next week the students will be busy making a budget and shopping list so that we can fill the pantry for the staff, family, and children at the TBCH campus!

The field trip is on Tuesday! Please have students wear their class t-shirt. Thank you very much for my volunteer helpers! We have room for a couple more, if you are free on Tuesday morning. It is not an all day commitment. I just need parents for an hour or so at HEB shopping. We will load them back up on the bus and I will take care of them the rest of the day at the Baptist Children's home. Let me know-
Dear Parents,
During the week of April 25, students will take the District Math Benchmark. This benchmark is created by the district and covers all of the units taught up to this point in the school year. The Math Benchmark has two parts and will be given over the course of two days, so attendance is critical during the week of administration. Beginning next week, students will review all of the skills covered up to this point in the year. This assessment will be a great reflection of the students’ knowledge and understanding of second grade math concepts.
Thank you in advance for making sure your child is at school on time.
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Team
