Reading News
As the 4th Quarter begins, we will shift our focus to poetry, studying and analyzing the structure and literary elements of poems and how they contribute to the meaning and theme. Students will continue synthesizing and integrating information from more than one text, in order to demonstrate their understanding in a written response. A study of drama as text will follow.
Students will always be asked to prove their point by citing text evidence.
As your child is reading at home, encourage them to cite evidence from the story/text as they discuss their reading with you. (“How do you know that? What does the author tell you? What can you infer about _____? What do you think the author wants you to learn/understand?”)
Writing News
Culminating our year-long writing resources, students will be guided through the process of Literary Analysis writing. Students will delve deeper into the messages that authors present to their readers, making notes and comparisons as we make our way through this process.
Ultimately, students will be writing an analytical opinion - one which analyzes and explores the author’s craft and writing style within a story or essay.
Science / Social Studies News
April has us turning our attention back to Social Studies with a look at “Maryland: A Changing State”. We will study post-Revolutionary War Maryland through the 1800s, including the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key and “The Star Spangled Banner”, and Maryland during the Industrial Revolution.
